They’re very proud of their warm hospitality and sustainable credentials at La Posada del Cucú, 15 minutes’ drive from the mountain tourist town of Salento in Quindío, Andean Colombia. This lush site surrounded by greenery spreads over a hectare of the Quindío River valley into forested foothills. As well as a generous and traditional breakfast being supplied (and other meals available by arrangement), facilities include a shared outdoor cooking range, picnic spots tucked away in leafy corners of the property and a modern bathroom with colourful tiled decor and a shower. There’s also a laundry room, and a parent-and-baby room – both handy if you’re travelling with toddlers. Dogs are welcome on site, and there’s a designated exercise area especially for them. You can take a refreshing dip in the natural swimming pool, or watch soothing goldfish flit around the pond. On clear nights, make good use of the telescope to trace the stars as they move across the heavens. If you need any help or sightseeing advice, staff at reception – housed in a graceful building with wrap-around verandahs – will be happy to assist.

Local attractions

If you’d like to explore the surrounding area, you can go hiking and cycling right from the pitches. A couple of companies in Salento (15 minutes’ drive) can organise pony-trekking jaunts fording rivers and negotiating steep climbs in the forest, as well as excursions on foot or by bike into the mountains. There are also trails along the Quindío River from the tiny rural settlement of Boquía (five minutes). You can stroll to the Santa Rita de Boquía waterfall (half an hour’s walk), a dramatic single cascade with a wild swimming spot at its base. You can also take cooling dips in natural pools just beyond the waterfall in remote countryside, about an hour’s walk from the pitches. The predominant crop in the region is coffee, and you can visit several plantations to taste their wares and buy the beans. Set in steep terraces, Las Acacias Coffee Farm (25 minutes’ drive) is a favourite stop, along with Finca Entrebosques (20 minutes). You can also mug up on local culture with a visit to the Iglesia Nuestra Senora del Carmen (15 minutes), a fine example of Spanish colonial architecture.
