Shaded grass pitches

  • Manicured, shaded grass pitches half an hour’s drive from Québec City
  • Chaudière Falls Park 10 minutes’ drive; Levis 15 minutes
  • Dog park; hiking trails from the site; communal fridge freezer
A well-maintained meadow close to the banks of the Beaurivage River (very close indeed: it is separated from the water only by the tarmac of Route 171) is the setting for Valdombre. This peaceful site on a farm a five-minute drive from Saint-Étienne-de-Lauzon, in the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec, welcomes families, dogs (who have their own large, fenced exercise yard) and naturists to its lushly forested surroundings. Hiking trails (many starting directly from the property) might lead you to Ludger-Bastien Park (half an hour on foot) or to a series of waterfalls along the Beaurivage (40 minutes). Alternatively, get behind the wheel of the car and head to the Éco-Parc de la Chaudière (10 minutes’ drive), on the river of the same name, where you might see the remains of an old mill as well as assorted birdlife, including Canada geese, cormorants and kingfishers. Chaudière Falls Park (10 minutes), closer to where the Chaudière River meets the St Lawrence River (across which is the sprawl of Québec City), has a suspension bridge and wooded walks. Barbecues are provided, and you can buy your grillables (and anything else you might need) in Saint-Étienne, which also has a varied range of dining establishments. As well as a toilet/shower block and washing-up area, the site has a launderette, a drying room and a communal fridge freezer.

Local attractions

Grab a bench in Parc du Rigolet or in dog-friendly Parc de l'Anse à l’Anguille in Levis (15 minutes’ drive) and devour a picnic while gazing across the river at Québec City. Then set about exploring the city’s Parc de la Rivière-Etchemin, with forested and waterside trails for walking and biking. Across the St Lawrence River, Jacques-Cartier Beach Park (15 minutes) has shaded trails and elevated viewpoints. At its westernmost end, it merges into Parc Cartier-Roberval, where an archaeological site explores the first encounters between the Indigenous population and French colonisers. Museums in Québec City (half an hour) shed light on the area’s maritime history (Naval Museum of Quebec), its artistic heritage (Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec) and its Indigenous societies (Museum of Civilization). On the outskirts of the city, Wendake is the ancestral home of the Wendat Nation, with a museum, craft stores and assorted cultural events.
