Peaceful pitches

General

  • Peaceful rural site a 15-minute walk from village pubs
  • Half an hour from the beaches of the south and west coasts
  • Firepit hire available on site, with wood and kindling to buy

Fancy a spot of rural relaxation a short walk from the village pub and with easy access to the famed Welsh castles and coastline? Then take a break at Y Bwthyn, a peaceful place surrounded by farmland and a 15-minute trot from the pubs and bakery in Llandissilio.

Energetic small fry (and accompanying canines) can romp about with impunity at this spacious site, and there’s plenty of stuff nearby to fuel holiday smiles too. Perhaps they’d like to play at being knights at Laugharne Castle, build sandcastles on Saundersfoot beach or have a go on the heart-thumping rides at Oakwood? All are within a half-hour drive.

Guests are welcome to set up their own barbecue or campfire for warm alfresco soirées (sensible locations away from the pitches only please, peeps) and individual firepits, wood and kindling are available to request on arrival for an extra charge.

All the basics are provided for a comfy stay: the toilet and shower block is sited on the accommodation field, and has separate facilities for ladies and gents.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Good location for reaching south or west coast also close to hills. Cozy pod.

    Disliked:

Chewing gum and tissue left in bin under bag. Microwave not cleaned properly (splattered ceiling). You may think I’m being picky but in these times it’s nice to know things are cleaned properly.

From the manager...

A very quiet site, friendly owners. Limited basic facilities.

    Disliked:

No covid precautions taken what so ever. No notices, no sanitiser at any of the facilities. I know we want to forget about it a bit when away but it was the only site we visited where there was nothing at all to keep the area safe.
The chemical waste disposal point - a toilet basin buried in the open ground covered by a dirty piece of plastic surrounded by stinging nettles - was the worst we have ever seen.

From the manager...

We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay. As regards Covid, there is hand sanitiser by the washing facilities, as well as soap and hot water in the toilets. With only 6 parties on the field at the most during your stay, the camp site was hardly overrun and therefore more than enough room to self distance. The toilets are also cleaned regularly (as can be seen by all our other reviews). We have had no other complaints regarding the chemical disposal point, and were advised by an inspector from the camping and caravanning club, that that was the best way of having it ( although I do apologise for the nettles - I have since seen to them!) Not really sure why you gave the accommodation a 2/5 on the score as you were staying in your own campervan. I'm afraid we can't really do anything about that.

Friendly family run farm, welcoming and helpful. The pod was warm and cosy and just because we were nearing the end of season the owners came by on first night with an extra electric heater which we didn’t end up needed but it was thoughtful. The pod came with absolutely everything you need to just rock up with your toiletries and change of clothes, even inside and outside furniture! toilets/shower/washing up facilities block very near by. TV, fridge, microwave in pod and the Fire pits added to the experience and have a sense of community living to the stay as we hurried together in a bid to start fire, extra logs available every day. Although it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere, we found it to be completely central to all the coastal areas we wanted to visit. 25 mins from Tenby, 30 mins from newgale, 45 mins from Abereiddy, there were a few good pubs to eat near by and the village store seemed to stick just about anything you needed supply wise. The price per night was amazing considering all of the above and we would love to return next season.

    Disliked:

It would be lovely to see some pathways out in around the pods/ pitches, it was dry when we stayed so the field wasn’t too bad to move about In.

From the manager...

Many thanks for this review. You have given us some lovely comments thank you and your photos are great. We're really pleased that you enjoyed yourselves and really appreciate the feedback regarding the paths. We are always trying to improve to make the best out of the site. Hope you can come back again soon.

Local attractions

Half an hour’s drive takes you down to the beaches of the south coast, including the sandy stretches at Saundersfoot and Tenby, from where you can also take a boat trip out of the harbour to try your luck spotting the local seals.

Active types can pick up the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Tenby to take a ramble along part of its 186-mile length in search of cliffs, coves and castles; a popular stretch is the eight-mile section from Tenby to Manorbier Castle. Those who’d rather take to the sea can hire motorboats, kayaks and jetskis in Tenby, or have a go at waterskiing or wakeboarding. Surfing types can head west to Newgale, just over half an hour away and a well known fave for boarders.

There’s always a castle nearby in this part of Wales, and at Y Bwthyn your nearest examples are Picton Castle, 20 minutes away, and Laugharne Castle, half an hour’s drive away. Picton looks like a classic castle from the outside, but has been restored inside as a smart stately home – a rather fab mash-up of styles. Leave time to walk through the woods and visit the Secret Owl Garden, too. Laugharne, in contrast, is an atmospheric ruin that overlooks the Taf estuary and provides some imagination-firing glimpses into 12th-century life.

Oakwood Theme Park and the Blue Lagoon waterpark are both around a 20-minute drive away.
