Fancy waking up to the spectacular big-country scenery of Stirlingshire before going for a spot of wild swimming in a serene lake? All this (and more besides) can be yours if you stay at Here and Now Pods, a small site on a family-run deer farm on the banks of Loch Rusky, on the eastern edge of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
An adults-only site, this is a good place for a romantic break. Accommodation is in secluded lakeside pods with a kingsize bed, ensuite shower and toilet, and a well-equipped kitchenette (with fridge freezer, kettle, toaster and a gas barbecue), plus a firepit outside, for which logs are supplied. You can relax on the deck of your pod, wee dram in hand, as you watch ospreys catching fish from the lake.
Here you can also combine cosying up to a loved one with your passion for active pursuits – hiking, for starters. The hilly paths in Queen Elizabeth Forest Park (half an hour’s drive) include a strenuous 14-km loop; there are also several cycling trails in the area, ranging in difficulty from moderate to challenging.
Then there are the water activities: the site owners will be happy to rent out paddleboards (please note that it’s not possible to use your own boards or vessels on the loch), or you can experience the thrill of a sunrise (or sunset, if you’re a late riser…) wild swim. And if this is all starting to sound like too much physical exertion, you can take it down a notch by booking a Reiki session with owner Natalie.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).- Facilities/activities including paddle boarding are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.
- Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.
- If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.
- Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.
- No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.
- Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

Local attractions
Stirling (half an hour’s drive) is dominated by a hilltop medieval castle that was the childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots and other monarchs. Check out the Great Hall and the Queen’s Inner Hall, with its splendid tapestries, then move on to the Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum, with its collections of watercolours and pewter artefacts.
Wildlife enthusiasts make a beeline for Argaty Red Kites (half an hour), a rewilding estate where they can watch red kites’ feeding sessions or go on beaver tours where they can learn all about how these animals shape their environment. There are also woodland hides from where you can observe red squirrels and woodpeckers.
Glasgow (one hour) is home to the world-class Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, with collections ranging from Ancient Egypt to local designer and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh. There are more Egyptian artefacts at the Hunterian Art Gallery, or you might prefer to spend a few hours strolling through Kelvingrove Park or shopping on Sauchiehall Street.
