Shop and sightsee until you drop in Edinburgh, then Kocoon your tired self and many shopping bags at the camping pods in Gorebridge’s Middle Meadow Village, where you’ll wake up to countryside views in the grounds of Kirkhill Mansion but be only a short drive or bus ride drive away from Edinburgh for Shopping: Round II. The sturdy Kocoon cabins at Middle Meadow Village come with solar LED lights and are built to withstand whatever Scottish weather decides to surface on your hol, with thick padded insulation to keep you toasty warm in all seasons and a window for letting the mansion estate air in on warmer breaks. Bring your usual camping gear (except, obv, the tent) along for a stay here, including your stove and pans – campfires are allowed on site. Too tired to cook? There’s an award-winning gastropub, The Sun Inn, just down the road. For podder essentials, Middle Meadow Village has a shower and toilet block on site and breakfast/fortification for another day’s shopping served in the outdoor eatery. And not among camping essentials but a definite billy bonus – there’s a hot tub available for guests’ use among the Kirkhill Mansion facilities: just the thing for shopped-out feet.

Route directions

Bus from Edinburgh: If coming via bus from Edinbugh city centre, the best bus to travel on is the x95 which leaves from the bus station. Ask the driver to let you off at Kirkhill Terrace which is the row of established houses after the new estate in Gorebridge. Across the road will be a sign for Kirkhill mansion at the gatehouse; and follow the drive down until you reach us. By car: We are located on the A7; if coming south on the A7 either from the city bypass or the city itself the first town to look for is Newtongrange; this will be at a fork in the road, stay to the right and continue on; the next landmark will be a Shell Garage on the right at a junction. Go straight ahead on this junction and you will come to a roundabout; go straight ahead on the roundabout and then take the next right. There will be signs for us after this. If coming from the south the first sign to look out for is Gorebridge. Don't turn off to Gorebridge but now keep an eye out on the left hand side for Gore Glen Country Park; we are the turning after Gore Glen and the sign is Kirkhill Mansion, on the left-hand side.

Local attractions

Edinburgh, of course: after emptying your wallet on Princes Street, you might want to amble along to some of the city’s many free attractions: its parks, gardens and many green spaces; museums like the acclaimed National Museum of Scotland, the Museum of Edinburgh and The People’s Story; the masterpieces in the Scottish National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, and churches including Greyfriar’s Kirk at the top of the Royal Mile, where the faithful Greyfriars Bobby sat by his master’s grave. Sniff. Heading out of the city on the cheap, you can comb the beaches and coast of East Lothian: Gullane is a hit with surfers and is only twenty minutes from Edinburgh, or tire feet out again by walking part of the John Muir Way along the coastline, from North Berwick towards Gullane and Cockenzie, or from Cockenzie towards Edinburgh and the Forth bridges of South Queensferry. Podders who like parks will find two within walking distance: the Gore Glen Woodland Park is half a mile away and open all year round, with woodland and riverside walks, regular events and views towards the Pentland Hills. Vogrie Country Park is a couple of miles from Gorebridge and is a parkland estate with a 9-hole golf course, miniature railway and the Victorian Vogrie House. Or go on a castle trail instead: natch there’s the famed Edinburgh Castle to rock around, but we’re also adding to our Lothian list seeing the world’s longest herbaceous border at the medieval Dirleton Castle, gazing over the Tyne from Crichton Castle or wandering around the ruins of Roslin Castle among the cliffs of Roslin Glen; while you’re in Roslin, go on the trail of the Holy Grail too at the famous Rosslyn Chapel and say a nervous hi to the 110+ Green Men. Wannabe ghost hunter? Ferret out spectres at Dalhousie Castle, eight miles south of Edinburgh or hunt down spooks in the Red Room at Borthwick Castle twelve miles south-east, with even more phantoms to be found on the several ghost tours available back at Edinburgh.
