  • Shepherd's hut in a 12-acre ornamental garden a mile from the sea
  • Wildlife haven: spot red squirrels on the 17-acre moorland walk
  • Kitchen, woodburning stove, double bed and shower room
Shepherds required. No experience necessary. Or sheep… That's right, just pack your bags and bring yourselves to this lovely spot, a shepherd's hut in a 12-acre ornamental garden. Brought to their full flowering life out of the Scottish moorland some 35 years ago, these family-run gardens a 15-minute drive from the town of Stranraer have a backdrop of sea views across to the Isle of Man and the Mull of Galloway. You'll feel tucked away in remote splendour in your cosy shepherd's hut overlooking the lake: it's a top spot for a pair of people who want a secluded stay in fine surrounds, with a well-equipped kitchen, woodburning stove, a shower room, comfortable double bed, parking space and wifi connection. In spite of the seclusion, Glenwhan Gardens has a tearoom serving full meals as well as cakes, sandwiches and drinks, and guests are welcome to explore the gardens at will, including the 17-acre moorland walk. The site has both cultivated and wild areas, and there's plenty of wildlife to look out for, including red squirrels, birds, wildfowl and fish in the lake. There's a small shop 10 minutes' drive away in Castle Kennedy, and pubs, food and supermarkets aplenty in Stranraer.

James Kelly shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful location in lovely gardens, loved the little wood burner which made the shepherds hut nice and cosy. Perfect for strolls with many beautiful viewing spots. Would recommend.

Disliked: Not a ‘Dislike’ as the lack of Wi-Fi was not a problem for us… recommend taking a radio 😀

James Kelly shepherd's hut

Liked: The accommodation was spotlessly clean, well-equipped and very comfortable. The shepherd's hut is set in stunningly beautiful gardens; these are open to the public, but the hut was well-screened and felt very private. The hosts were friendly and helpful, and made us feel very welcome.

Disliked: The information provided before our stay was a little vague, so we weren't sure who were were supposed to speak to on arrival. We popped in to the cafe/ reception and said that we'd booked into the shepherd's hut and the member of staff seemed confused as to why we were telling her! Eventually we got shown to the hut however, but we would have liked more detailed information before we arrived. The information said that there would be wifi at the hut, but although there were details in the hut for the password etc there was no internet to connect to?

James Kelly shepherd's hut

Liked: The setting was wonderful and the Shepherds Hut was well- appointed. We enjoyed the bird life as well as the trees and plants. Having a bird feeder outside the hut was inspired and attracted a lot of species. The domestic birds ((hens Guinea fowl peacocks) were regular visitors too. We visited the cafe and found that good value and tasty food. All staff were helpful and friendly. A magical place !

James Kelly shepherd's hut

Liked: It was my 2nd year and if you are seeking a quiet peacefull and relaxing break from the rat race and big city life then this is ideal, the staff are very friendly, there is a canteen just a few steps away from the shepards hut where we stayed which is very well equipped with all you need including a toilet and shower and a very comfortable bed.The 1st 2 days were wet but still very cosy in the hut. The last day started wet but from midday on the rest of the day was beautiful warm and sunny and we had a lovely long walk in the gardens and twice around the moors which was so remote and peaceful with no one else around, It was like being in your own little world.

James Kelly shepherd's hut

Liked: A truly wonderful place to stay, our hosts were very accommodating and did everything they could to ensure our stay was a good one. Myself and my friend stayed in the Shepard's Hut which was just amazing with everything you could need for a short stay. There was no cooker but it did have a small hob, a microwave, fridge and a kettle that you could either heat up on the hob or place on top of the small log fire which was more than adequate to heat up the water and keep the hut warm and cozy as well as an old cottage style sink with hot and cold running water to finish off the look and the feel of the place. To the back of the hut is a small bathroom with a full size electric shower with sink and toilet. We were also provided with fresh towels and bedding, free logs and kindling, a fresh jug of milk, tea, jam and croissants too. What else could you ask for? The outside was wonderful too. Plenty of seating out the front of the hut, although the large wooden steps provide a nice feel to it all, and nice to sit on too. There's also seating at the back of the hut and a table where you can eat your food when the sun is out. Oh and a charcoal BBQ to use too. There's birds and wildlife all around this place, it is located in a large 12 acre garden after all. There's bird feeders next to the hut which attract all sorts of various birds that that you can watch comfortably from your window. There were also 2 escaped chickens that were fun to watch, oh and Rosie, the owners pet dog. If you love dogs like we do then you'll love Rosie too, she's just so adorable and once she gets to know you will stop by whenever she sees you. Not forgetting the Peacocks too, sooo colourful. Then there's the 12 acres of plants, trees, shrubs and various ponds to discover too, they truly have worked hard to make this place what it is. And if that isn't enough there's also another 17 acres of moorland walks to get through too. I really can't say enough good things about this place. If like me you depend on Wi-Fi then at least on our visit I was out of luck, there isn't any Wi-Fi signal. Luckily though the area is good for mobile and data signal so it wasn't an issue at all.

Disliked: The only downside to our visit is that we had an elderly couple walk past our hut when we were there, it totally wasn't their fault though. As you walk through the garden there are some steps that take you up to our hut, I think there needs to be a sign on the entrance to those steps that this route is private for guests, just as the owner has the same signs for their own private section of the property. I'm not saying this is a negative feature as it happened only once, but maybe something that the owners could do to prevent this in the future. It would never stop us from going back there again though, we love the place!

James Kelly shepherd's hut

Liked: Peace, quiet, fantastic location, beautifully presented accommodation. Very relaxing wee break with great hosts. So nice to have 12 acres of beautiful gardens all to yourself (after 5 pm)

Disliked: Leaving at the end of the stay! A couple of extra kitchen utensils would be a help

James Kelly shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful and well appointed Shepherd’s hut nestled in Glenwhan Gardens. Lots of homely finishing touches - fire ready to be lit, butter and milk in fridge, croissants for first breakfast. Clean and cosy and full of character. Will certainly be back again.

James Kelly shepherd's hut

Liked: Amazing Shepard's Hut surrounded by stunning gardens. The hut had everything you need, and stayed quite warm even through some stormy October nights. The bed was deceptively large and comfortable. The grounds also provided for a great atmosphere and daily walks. It is also located really centrally to many local attractions, towns and villages. Onwer was responsive, but did not distupt our stay at all. Would highly recommend.

James Kelly shepherd's hut

Liked: We so loved our visit earlier this year we had to come back for more! The gardens are stunning as they move into autumn. A beautiful tranquil place to relax & recharge, we had hoped to toasty our toes by the log burner, but the weather was so mild & hut so cosy it wasn't to be, maybe next time :)

Local attractions

For beach walks, paddles, rockpooling and big skies, it's a 10-minute drive to the sands of Luce Bay and 15 minutes to Sandhead. When you've built enough sandcastles, see some real examples at Stranraer (15 minutes' drive) and Dunskey (half an hour). The latter is a 12th-century ruin teetering on sea cliffs, while Stranraer gives you the chance to combine castle tours with a wider, in-depth walking circuit of the town and its centuries of history. There's more horticultural mastery to be seen at Ardwell Gardens (20 minutes), a complex of walled, formal and woodland gardens in the grounds of an 18th-century house, and at Logan Botanical Gardens (25 minutes): all owe their vigour and diversity to the warm climes and waters brought all the way to the Galloway coast from Mexico on the Gulf Stream. To bury yourself even deeper in foliage, make for Galloway Forest Park for fishing in Loch Trool (an hour away), hikes through the wooded hills and stargazing in the UK's first Dark Sky Park.
