Local attractions

Start your break with a stroll through Gatehouse of Fleet (10 minutes’ drive) to visit the Mill on the Fleet, a riverside visitor centre in an attractive 18th-century mill with a café and a couple of shops. Just outside the town, Cally Gardens (home to red squirrels) and 15th-century Cardoness Castle are worth visiting too. For those who’ve come to soak up the scenery, the Galloway Forest Park (20 minutes) is a must – there are all sorts of activities here including walking, mountain biking (at the Kirroughtree and Glentrool 7Stanes centres) and places to see wildlife like wild goats and red deer. This was also the UK’s first Dark Sky Park, so it’s a splendid place for stargazing. You’ll have seen the sea from your hut already, but to get closer you can choose from several sandy beaches – Mossyard (five minutes) and Carrick (20 minutes) are a couple of favourites. For a post-beach ice cream, it has to be Cream o' Galloway (15 minutes) – it’s got a range of tempting flavours made right there on the farm.
