General

  • Quiet park within walking distance of Gatehouse of Fleet
  • In a wildlife haven and a few miles from the coast
  • Free use of sister park with pool, restaurant, gym and solarium

If you're after a quieter vibe at a family holiday park in Dumfries and Galloway, you'll very much like Anwoth Caravan Park.

This is the sister site of Auchenlarie Holiday Park (also on Pitchup.com), in a peaceful wildlife haven setting near the pretty town of Gatehouse of Fleet and in an area that's inspired Scottish bards and artists for centuries. But – what genius – guests at Anwoth can also use the facilities at Auchenlarie, which is about four miles/seven minutes' drive along the A75 (turn right on leaving Anwoth and look for Auchenlarie signposted on the left) and which has a heated indoor pool, restaurant, takeaway and leisure centre with gym and solarium among loads loads more. Entertainment and leisure passes available for daily, short break or weekly stays: buy on arrival at Anwoth.

But back to the peace and quiet… Anwoth is in an area where you can sit still and see a lot of wildlife: herds of deer regularly roam the surrounding landscape, you might see otters if you're very very quiet, and you'll likely spy birds of prey and red squirrels among the many local species. This is also serious angling locale, particularly for salmon and trout fishing in the nearby rivers of the Esk, Annan, Nith, Ken, Dee and Cree.

Anwoth has a launderette, washing facilities and a shower and toilet block on site. Restaurants, cafés, bars, craft shops and a well-stocked convenience store are at Gatehouse of Fleet a short walk away; the town has a local bus service too.

Please note

Facilities/activities including use of leisure facilities, round of mini golf, solarium, gym are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (excluding couples) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bed linen and towels are not provided for caravan hire, but guests can order a pack of these on arrival.

The pitches were good although small. There was a concrete area for the caravan and it was level so made setting up easy.
It is a short walk into the town which has a nice range of shops and pubs.
As we were there during the Covid-19 pandemic we did not use the toilets or showers. The chemical disposal room as really clean and obviously cleaned regularly.

    Disliked:

The pitches are small and I doubt there was space for an awning

Everything!! I found this place amazing and very friendly! From we arrived till we left. Everyone was always saying good morning, and have a lovely day. I would recommend anyone to stay here. This is ideal for any age- I myself 33 years old Male and my partner 37 years old Male, had a fabulous time! I work in all wards throughout the NHS and this was exactly what I needed. If you want to escape COVID-19 and relax. This is your place, following the current guidelines of course and keeping safe and others. I will be booking this again my next weekend off!! I didn’t want to come home :( but will return before the end of the month. Thank you all at Anworth Carvan Park.

Local attractions

Anyone with any sense should be quite the fan of Dumfries and Galloway, for many many reasons including its wildlife and birdwatching, its lush landscape and the evidence of its rich history, archaeology and art in its castles, towers, abbeys, earthworks and standing stones. And did you know that JM Barrie had the idea for Peter Pan while in Dumfries – and that nearby Sanquhar has the oldest post office in Scotland…?

Paul, Neil and Bob (the new generation of Swalwells to own Amwoth Caravan Park) also suggest a look at Whithorn, on the southern tip of the Machars peninsula and the seat of Christianity in Scotland, and at Lochmaben as the birthplace of Robert the Bruce. And if you like reading Rabbie, you might also like to see Dumfries, home and resting place for famed Scottish poet Robert Burns.

Ecclefechan, the birth town of Thomas Carlyle, is also within reach – do be sure to have an Ecclefechan butter tart while you're there.

Must see

  • John Paul Jones Cottage Museum & Visitor Centre (38.6 kilometres)
  • Robert Burns Centre (42.0 kilometres)
