A stay at Grobdale of Girthon involves a bit of an adventure – the pitches at this Dumfries and Galloway site can only be accessed by four-wheel drive, and you’ll need to be a pretty confident and competent driver to tackle the rough terrain.
The rewards of a slightly bumpy journey are fabulous, though – these pitches are made for true wild camping experiences, with plenty of space and stunning views across glens, wetlands, forests and river. It's all about proper peace and quiet here (although you may hear the odd noise from the neighbouring sheep or some passing wildlife…).
In keeping with the wild experience, there are no facilities here at all – so you’ll need to be self sufficient on the bathroom front in particular. Campfires and barbecues are permitted at the pitches, and a flame-cooked meal will surely taste even better if you pick up supplies from the site’s own farm shop, stocked with meat, eggs, honey and other bits and pieces.
For other supplies, head to Gatehouse of Fleet (15 minutes’ drive); it also has a few pubs for those who’d like to eat out or grab a drink while they’re out. Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright are within a half-hour drive for more options.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.- The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).
- This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.
- There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.
- There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.
- If arriving by vehicle: due to the terrain, only four-wheel drives are permitted.
