General
- Friendly family site in a traditional Irish village
- Close to pubs, shops, playground and miles of country walks
- Disabled access and kitchen; shop and butcher's within 200 metres
Marvellous marvellous Mayo… the Connaught county home to Achill Island, Knock Shrine, Ballina and fishing for plump salmon on the marvellous River Moy… surfing, kitesurfing and diving off the coast or horse riding along it… country walks all around... and nights/meals out in Westport and Castlebar… if you've never been, you'll likely like Mayo very much indeed.
And if you fancy seeing what a trad little Mayo village feels like, make your Mayo stay and west of Ireland base at friendly Carra Caravan and Camping Park, as it's set in teeny Belcarra ('Mayo's tidiest village') in the south of the county. The village is home to a mere 200 residents and everyone knows everyone else, but fret not: you'll still get a most warm Mayo welcome when you first show your face in the local pub….
The park has a new amenities block with disabled access, and a small campers' kitchen with fridge and kettle. A convenience store, two of those friendly Mayo pubs, a butcher's, a church and a petrol station are within 200 metres. The village fishery area and the sports centre to play badminton, handball and racquetball are popular with guests coming to Carra too.
Carra Caravan and Camping Park's speciality is the wealth of countryside walks available straight from its site: ask the staff for tips and maps to set you on your way. And bring the pooch along for walks too, as both the site and the village are thoroughly pet friendly.

Local attractions
There's lots and lots to do around these parts, so base yourself at Carra Caravan and Camping Park for a week or two and get stuck straight in.
The country walks that are so splendid around here include the peaceful and relaxing Riverside Loop Walk, an hour's worth of ambling through fields and farmland. Visit the Eviction Cottage on the way, where the last eviction in Belcarra took place in 1886; the building is now a museum and heritage centre. (And did you know that the word 'boycott' became a verb in Co Mayo, after Captain Charles Boycott who was shunned by locals after attempting to evict 11 of them from his land...?)
Achill Island, Croagh Patrick and Ceide Fields are within easy driving distance, as is Ballintobber Abbey, the National Museum of Irish Country Life and Moorehall Forest Park (both eight kilometres away), Westport House (18 kilometres) and Knock Shrine (20 kilometres).
Mayo's county town Castlebar is eight kilometres from Belcarra and has a theatre, golf course and swimming pool alongside the usual pubs, shops and restaurants.
