General

  • Scenic and peaceful site on the stunning Wild Atlantic Way
  • A 15-minute drive from Carndonagh and 20 minutes from Buncrana
  • Tullagh Bay and Pollan beaches within 10 minutes’ drive

Do peaceful hols in the northernmost reaches of Ireland, in the wild countryside by the shores of the North Atlantic Sea, sound simply heavenly? Then head along to Binion Bay Caravan Park, a family-run and family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the Inishowen village of Clonmany in Donegal.

On the route of the spectacular Wild Atlantic Way – a 2,500-kilometre driving route from Malin Head (40 minutes away) to Kinsale (in Cork) – this site’s well-placed for both quick pitstops and longer stays. Dog owners and avid hill walkers will be chuffed too, as it’s at the foot of Binion Hill (with stunning views from the summit), five minutes from walks to Glenevan Waterfall, and within 15 minutes of hikes on Reachtain Mhór, Bulbin, Dunaff and the Urris Hills.

Proximity to sandy stretches is an added boon, with Tullagh Bay and Pollan beaches both within 10 minutes of the site and Lagg and its sand dunes half an hour away. During warmer months, dip toes in the North Atlantic (remembering, of course, that warm weather doesn’t mean warm sea) or bask in the Donegal sun, while colder days can be spent wrapped up tight for wanders along the sand.

Cold chilled everyone to the bone? Head back to the site to thaw by the campfire, then head into Carndonagh, 15 minutes away, to pick up supplies at the supermarkets before settling back in next to the fire with eats now smouldering on the barbecue.

    Close to the beach.
    Friendly staff.
Good space around tents (very rocky ground so bring extra pegs!).
    Beautiful sunset.
Close to Glenevin Waterfall and Ballyliffen.
Most of our travelling was by car (with small children) but can walk to beach and town.

Lack of social distancing.08/31/2020

  • Liked:

    The location.
The beautiful and clean shower block with ample hot water.
The wealth of information given about the local area.

    Disliked:

Tents pitched too close together given social distancing guidance.
Left early as the camp site owner had allowed a party of young couples to pitch around us who were definitely not socially distancing. Usually wouldn’t have been a problem, but given that the number of Covid-19 infections are rising thought this was irresponsible.
Very soggy site as there had been a lot of rain - probably added to the problems with space.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, we are glad that you appreciated the information provided to you on check in and how clean the facilities were as we put a lot of effort into them.
We are sorry that you chose to leave early due to other guests being present on the campsite. The current guidelines require that a 2 metre social distance be kept between each pitch, which was maintained during your stay. We also have signs posted throughout the campsite reminding people to distance and informing guests that they are not to mix with other groups. However we do require that each guests takes responsibility for their own actions and keeps a safe distance from other groups as it would be impossible to monitor every guest 24/7.

Owner was informative, with local attractions close to the site, clean, had no problems pitching tent, pegs went in no problem. Owner had heavier pegs if needed. Owner greeted us each day. We travelled with 4 children & 2 dogs. Close to the beach which we enjoyed on our first day there as it was 23c. We had a campfire each night & looked at the mountains & stars. We went to Malin Head, Dunree fort on the recommendation of the owner & we weren’t disappointed. This was the first time we had gone camping, all in all the 4 nights we a brilliant time & has whetted our appetite to do more camping. We will be back in Binion bay caravan & camping next year without a doubt. One the locals was walking his goat on a lead & now my kids want a goat

We had a fantastic 3-night stay at this family-friendly (and dog-friendly) site, surrounded by amazing views, mountains, beeches, waterfalls - so much to do and see nearby. The site was clean, with the wc and washing-up area very close to the tents, with showers and further wcs a short walk away. The owners are friendly and helpful, and our stay was relaxed and quiet - the soothing sound of a stream running nearby contributed to the best three nights' sleep I have had in a tent! We witnessed magnificent sunsets and gazed at the stars, sitting around a chiminea that happened to be in the field. We cooked on our own stoves, and other guests used barbecues, whilst the guests in the 3 glamping tents lit fires with wood provided by the owners. The parking arrangements are a bit random and slightly rocky (and mucky in wetter weather), but the owner was on hand to make sure everybody got sorted, so it wasn't really an issue for us or our friends.
All in all, a lovely stay, with the added bonus of observing the daily wanderings of the sheep in the next field. I'd go back here again.

Local attractions

For those who want to stay active, but in a leisurely manner, the site’s well-placed for low-energy activities. A 10-minute drive from base will see wannabe Shane Lowrys, and Leona and Lisa Maguires, at play at the home of the Dubai Irish Open, Ballyliffin Golf Club, while a 25-minute journey places those angling for a peaceful time at Eddie Fullerton Reservoir for brown trout fly-fishing.

History buffs have plenty to explore nearby too: Doagh Famine Village is 15 minutes away, and a must-visit open-air museum for anyone interested in learning the unvarnished truth of rural Irish life since the 1840s. For forays further back in time, try a visit to Grianán of Aileach, 40 minutes from the site – there are spectacular views from the megalithic hillfort – then bounce back to the 19th century at Fort Dunree Military Museum.

If retail therapy is beckoning, it’s 20 minutes by car to Buncrana – a seaside resort town with shops, pubs, cafés and seafood restaurants – or 50 minutes to the city of Derry/Londonderry (over the border in Northern Ireland), where there’s a large shopping centre, as well as manor houses, an aquarium, and numerous museums and sites relating to the Troubles.
