  • Peaceful pitches by a stream in the Exmoor National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Minehead and Dunkery Beacon
  • Wild-style camping with a village pub five minutes' walk away
Spacious, level pitches in a gorgeous Somerset valley, with a stream running past, starry skies overhead by night and (crucially) a pub five minutes’ walk away – it’s no wonder the folk at Willow Stream Camping suggest that this is wild camping at its best. The pub in question is in the village of Timberscombe, which also has a small shop/post office where guests can pick up necessities while they’re here (further supplies are available five minutes’ drive away in Dunster). As well as being handy for the village, this location also means that you can mix up coast and countryside as you wish – there are plenty of places to hike or ride mountain bikes nearby, and it’s a 10-minute drive to Minehead for beach time and coast walks. The surroundings here are those of Exmoor National Park, which means that the views are splendid by day and by night: this is an official dark sky area, so when the sun goes down those moorland vistas should be replaced by some impressive displays overhead (clouds permitting). You’re welcome to light campfires or firepits at Willow Stream to keep you warm as you wait for the stars to come out (and you can buy logs here to feed them with). Pitches here are wild in style but not entirely frill-free: guests have access to portable toilets, free hot showers, wash basins, drinking water and firepits. As a rubbish-free site, all rubbish must be taken home with you or taken to the local recycling centre in Minehead.

Local attractions

Exploring Exmoor National Park is a breeze from here – head out to visit popular spots like Dunster Castle (five minutes’ drive) and Tarr Steps (25 minutes) or find a less busy corner for a quieter hike on your own. If you’re up for a climb, Dunkery Beacon – Exmoor’s highest point – is 10 minutes away. The national park runs all the way to the coast, of course, so you’ll want to get some seaside time in on the schedule too – perhaps taking in the beach and family activities in Minehead (10 minutes) or taking a paddleboard out from Porlock (20 minutes). There are more water-based activities (including fishing) at Wimbleball Lakes (20 minutes); meanwhile, for other local days out you could try the likes of Luckyard Farm (10 minutes) or have a ride on the West Somerset Railway (10 minutes).
