Glamping wagons in the gardens

General

  • Retro glamping units in a peaceful riverside glade near Crewkerne
  • Half an hour's drive from Glastonbury and the Jurassic Coast
  • On a 14-acre historic estate with pub and restaurant

Seeking a serene Somerset stay? Have a hassle-free hol at Haselbury Mill, on a cracking 14-acre estate five minutes from Crewkerne.

This is a place with quite a chunk of history behind it – the original buildings date all the way back (way, way back) to the times of William the Conqueror. The glamping units, in a gorgeous little glade by the Parrett river, are from days of yore too (although they’re very much of the vintage variety rather than the ancient).

The wagons here are traditional numbers, collected in a quiet corner and cleverly restored to hang on to the best of their retro features while upping the comfort factor by throwing in some modern bits and bobs, including tea and coffee making facilities (vital for those who simply can’t function until they’ve had their morning cuppa.) Smart modern toilet and shower facilities are housed in another wagon parked up in the same spacious clearing.

Need more than a cup of tea to get you going of a morning? Sorted: a generous breakfast is provided for all glamping guests, and served up a short walk away in the main mill. With any luck that’ll see you through your days out (hiking, beachcombing or gadding about in Glastonbury, perhaps) until it’s time to come back and settle in once again for evening drinks and a meal.

Bag a table by the lakeside restaurant’s glass wall for dinner with a view, or potter over to the site’s pub for woodfired pizzas and pies to accompany pints of local ale or cider.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The shepherd's hut is not recommended for people above 5'8" because the width of the hut restricts the length of the bed.

Loved the 1960's caravan we stayed in along with the site and grounds. Lovely building and vintage vehicles. The staff were lovely.

    Disliked:

The restaurant was lovely with lovely food, but service was very slow. For breakfast we asked for a full English with toast, the toast never came, we asked again for the toast and it still never came. The portions were also very small for breakfast.

Booked the Shepherd's Hut for my daughter and myself for …02/24/2020

Booked the Shepherd's Hut for my daughter and myself for few days during half term. It was clean and tidy and great fun. We topped and tailed on the double bed, my admin mistake, didn't realise till after I booked in was a double bed. It has everything you need, shower, bathroom, tv, coffee, tea etc. The Shepherd's Hut is in a glade by a brook with 5 others, easy walking distance from the main hotel. For cuteness and novelty value it has to be tried if you are under 5' 8". We parked in the glade but it was a bit muddy but you can easily walk to the main carpark at the Mill.

The breakfast taken in Haselbury Mill was excellent. Lots of choice and to a very high standard. the staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We also had dinner in the restaurant and weren't disappointed. Would have liked to try Windy Miller's pub and the pies. Next time!

    Disliked:

Probably a bit small to spend more than a few days in.

Local attractions

Inspired by all the bits of the past on display around the estate? There’s plenty more nearby. On a rather grander scale than your digs (fab though they are) are the smart stately homes of Montacute House, a Tudor pile with gorgeous formal gardens (15 minutes’ drive) and Barrington Court, home to a walled garden and orchard (20 minutes).

Orchards are a fairly common sight around these parts, and their offerings go towards creating the famed Somerset cider. Sample a sip or several at Burrow Hill Cider (20 minutes) – they’ve been pressing the stuff for more than 200 years so they know a thing or two. If you fancy a snifter of something stronger, their cider brandy is worth trying too.

Burrow further back in history with a trip to Glastonbury Tor (half an hour) to hear tales of King Arthur and Excalibur; or delve into the age of the dinosaurs down at the Jurassic Coast. Charmouth beach (half an hour) still harbours ancient fossils, for those who know where to look (and that’d be in the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre if you’re not lucky with seeking out your own).

Must see

  • Montacute House (7.2 kilometres)
  • Mapperton House & Gardens (12.3 kilometres)
  • Fleet Air Arm Museum (16.0 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Montacute House (7.1 kilometres)
  • Tintinhull Garden (9.5 kilometres)
