Sunset over the fields

General

  • Small and simple eco-friendly site near Lytchett Matravers in Dorset
  • A 15-minute drive from Poole and half an hour from Studland beach
  • Firewood sold on site; 15 minutes by footpath to pub and shop

Neddy Green: a simple, fab and eco-friendly smallholding, just outside the village of Lytchett Matravers.

When you see the views from the big and open field you’ll understand why the Neddy Green team care so much about the environment and have worked so hard to build a place in harmony with it. It’s low-impact all round: composting toilets, a cold water tap and a shelter they call ‘the bar’ that has been, like much of the structures on site, cleverly upcycled for new purposes. (Please note there are no shower facilities: this is a back to basics site with a cold tap and composting toilets only.)

Kids are welcome here and they’ll love zooming about the wide open spaces, meeting the resident chickens and goats; the camping part of the site is completely car free, so it's a safe environment for kids to run around in as well. Barbecues and campfires are welcome in designated areas and you can buy firewood at the house. For eating out, take the country path from site to a pub with food; a a small supermarket is in the village 15 minutes’ walk or a five-minute drive away.

For bigger walks, make tracks to the Hartland Moor Nature Reserve whose wild plains start just outside Wareham (15 minutes’ drive). It’s the backdrop to many of Thomas Hardy’s novels and screen adaptations of the same, full of wildlife and walking routes.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

There are no cars allowed in the pitching field at all. The site team provides wheelbarrows and carts to move your things onto the site. This is for the safety of children who are encouraged to run wild around the grounds.

Lovely stay in an idyllic setting. The campsite was very lovely, passionate staff who are always making sure guests have a happy stay. A lot of great nearby things to do such as a local pub, nice walks, a trip to Poole or even a lovely place to just stay in the site and not leave! Very nice views over the hills.

Thank you for the great fortnight we just spent at Neddy Green's campsite and for making us feel so welcome. It is with pleasure that I write this review. We will be returning, and following your progress and we wish you guys well.
The location itself is stunning, with spectacular views. Exactly what we were looking for, very basic but just this side of wild: a field, running cold water, compost toilets, a washing up station (with that view), a few happy neighbours, a fire every night and the general good atmosphere of a place where everyone is happy and free. We enjoyed it even more than we expected and it really felt like home (if home was a thrilling adventure). The outdoor cold shower cubicle, installed the previous week to cool campers during the heatwave was an unexpected  and very welcome surprise which I made the most of in all weathers.

What really made the experience extra special was the way the place is run.
We were made to feel so welcome by Jay. He is discreet but engaging and so considerate. He has such a good attitude and cares very much that every camper should get the best experience he can offer. We saw him working tirelessly to achieve this. He made sure that we never ran out of firewood.  He kept the place spotless, and made sure social distancing could be adhered to. This is not a campsite that would ever feel crowded, the owners want to make sure of that, but in Covid times, he ensured there was even more space, so we all had a vast pitch. He cleaned the compost toilets twice a day, even built a new "block" halfway through the season, to keep them fresh. Good compost toilets make so much sense, and are a mark of how well maintained the place is. Well maintained compost toilets, as these were, are clean, they don't smell and so you get used to them very easily. Top marks.

No cars allowed on site, there is a dedicated car park. This makes a huge difference. It feels safer for kids to go wild, and they do. It also makes the place feel wilder and more natural for us mature folk.
I must add that we arrived on the first day of rain after the August heatwave, and we experienced both storms Ellen and Francis, and some spectacular rain. This kind of camping is not for the faint hearted and can be terrifying. But once again Jay was there, making sure everyone was and felt safe. He  made sure everyone was in a sheltered position, and spent the day preparing the site and checking everything was ship shape for the weather to come, even moving some of the more exposed tents. He did his rounds in the middle of the night, in lashing rain and wind, during the storms, to check tents, adding pegs and sorting out guy ropes as required. Our neighbours during storm Francis, a mother and daughter on their first ever camping trip, only had a lightweight "garden" tent. Jay secured it and they had a great night. They were thrilled, in the morning, having enjoyed the wild weather and even a good night's sleep!
Top experience, top marks. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we extended our stay by a few days.

Really well run place. The guy managing the campsite was helpful and friendly, we had everything we needed and no real issues.
We are a couple in our 30's and when we saw the kids running around the place we hesitated, but actually it was so well run and the spaces were separated out that noise etc wasnt an issue. Everyone was very friendly and considerate.

Local attractions

Surrounded by the moors, Corfe Castle (20 minutes) is well worth clambering about; cool off afterwards on the floating rafts, slides and obstacles of Dorset Waterpark.

More watery antics are at the Brenscombe Outdoor Centre in Wareham, from powerboating to paddleboarding and raft building, or just heading to the beach and jumping into the water. It’s around half an hour to Studland beach for kayaking, sandcastles and simple splashing about, and a similar distance to wilder stretches like Kimmeridge and Lulworth. A 45-minute drive will have you at the fossil hunting of Chesil beach.

For clifftop walks, the South West Coast Path starts (or finishes) in Poole, 15 minutes away: it's 630 miles long in total, but the marked trails deliver grand views and wildlife all the way along. The Poole to Swanage stretch makes an easy seven-mile walk with a foot-resting ferry ride back, taking in the geological site of Old Harry’s Rocks enroute.

Poole's also a prime spot for boat trips to see the bird colonies in the cliffs, seal colonies at sea and for access to Brownsea island, a nature reserve with walking trails and rare red squirrels. The Splashdown Waterpark’s slides, chutes and pools provide plenty to screech about, and inland, the combined attractions of Monkey World and the Tank Museum (15 and 20 minutes) keep everyone’s monkeys amused.
