General

  • Scenic farm site in the Hartland Moor National Nature Reserve
  • A 10-minute drive to Wareham and 25 minutes to Poole
  • Firepit hire and wood/kindling sales, plus yoga classes on request

Spacious fields, wide open skies and fab views towards castles and sea… If that ticks the boxes, make tracks for grassy Knoll Farm Campsite, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Wareham.

This is a particularly scenic Dorset spot too: in the Hartland Moor National Nature Reserve and within 15 minutes of the Jurassic Coast, this is a prime destination for taking in world-famed scenery and coastal and countryside walks. It’s also close to lots of avenues for hiking and biking, so get pedalling on the 11-kilometre Sika Trail in Wareham Forest or turn feet towards the Purbeck Hills for clambering walks, both about 10 minutes away.

Prefer strolls to be a little sandier? The site’s within easy reach of plenty of beaches, seaside towns and Jurassic Coast landmarks, including Lulworth Cove, Studland, Swanage, Man O’War and Durdle Door all within 25 minutes of base.

After all that, no energy need be expended back on site (though yoga classes are available on request): there’s no parking next to pitches, but there are trolleys and staff to help carry belongings from cars. Wood and kindling are available for sale and there are firepits to hire, so no need to lug the barbecue along from home. Fancy a night off cooking? That’s a cinch too: a pub serving local eats is about 10 minutes’ walk from the site.

The site has toilets, a washing-up area and a simple shower.

Great Atmosphere and friendly owners. Toilets and showers were quirky and clean. Pizza van on Friday and Saturday nights along with live music made for a great weekend away. Kids loved the space to play rounders / cricket, which is rare over a weekend on any campsite.

Camping is not my thing but we bought a huge tent a few years back and all the gear and as everything was booked we thought we’d give it a go. Upon arrival At Knoll you are greeted by what my middle class prejudice would refer to as new age hippies as staff. Long hair, Rasta hair the type of thing you’d see at a festival (so I’ve heard) I wasn’t hopeful. Anyway as a Home Counties snob camping for the first time in 7 years I could not have been more wrong. Well anyway it didn’t start well, it was so windy on arrival that it was impossible to erect the tent ⛺️ The tent turned into a giant sail and was being damaged as it blew about with us flailing on guy ropes - this was the excuse I needed and I went to the hippies to ask for a refund and I had already looked on booking.com for a hotel!! However the hippies rallied to my aid and four of them came up and the tent was hauled out of the sky and up in no time, all that practice at festivals not wasted ... Anyway that was very kind and impressive of the staff. Anyway then storm ba—d hit or whatever it was called 2 days of torrential rain and gale force winds - imagine my joy. What could possibly go wrong ? Being inexperienced I had chosen to camp on an exposed hilltop that now resembled the north face of the Eiger I’ve never seen wind and rain like it. After a truly terrifying night of gales and torrential rain which peaked at 3am at a low point of me blowing up my own deflating air bed...We went out for the day and I’m told 3o mins later the tent blew down. Now what happened next was a surprise- I was out all day. In my absence the staff hippies saved my tent. Not only did they flatten it and secure it but they emptied out all my possessions and took them into a barn in the dry, this involved trollies and a 300 metre walk and must have taken an hour. God bless them I say. Pretty outstanding service. Anyway that was enough camping for me we packed up the now sopping wet rag that used to be a tent and headed off to a hotel 🏨! Lessons learned - don’t be a middle aged Home Counties snob and judge by appearance and secondly don’t go camping again... ever
So this is a personal thank you to the staff, I don’t know your names but there was a particularly attractive lady with long Rasta hair that walked around in hot pants (so I was told I didn’t notice..) who seemed to be in charge - thank you for your efforts and excellent service.

Every time I went to the shower it was cold but my kids and wife all said it was hot. The facilities are very basic, no hot water to wash up in 4 toilets and 4 showers but I was prepared for this as I had read reviews.
Don’t camp up the hill too windy !

Facilities were never “very busy” if you timed it right there was no queue for the showers.
The barn area was good to be able to escape the weather.
Location was good for the many attractions in the area.
Pizza company cooked fresh pizzas on the Friday night! With live music in the barn to accompany.
Also one of the site owners friends was a “bubbleologist” which was a nice wind down show for our little one.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but a suggestion of having a couple of sinks nearer to the toilets/showers to be used for teeth/hands/face. (Had someone try to clean their teeth in the same sink I washing dishes in!)
Everything else was great though, other than the weather. But that’s a bank holiday week for you!!

Everything! Loved the huge field with so much choice of where to pitch. Loved the awesome views of Poole in one direction and Corfe Castle the other with a backdrop of the nature reserve stretching for miles. Wareham town is four minutes away which is a perfect English village.

The staff are warm, hospitable, super helpful and friendly. More sites should be run like this. Hot clean showers and great toilets.

A perfect place to bring your dog as well.

    Awesome stay.

Local attractions

Step into the past by wandering along to Corfe Castle, less than five minutes’ drive from base. The 11th-century castle was built by William the Conqueror and was one of the earliest to be built in England – that’s more than 1,000 years of history to explore around this spectacular ruin.

Staying in the days of yore is far from challenging too: take a ride on the Swanage Railway heritage steam trains, pay a visit to the spectacular 17th-century Lulworth Castle, call into the Clouds Hill cottage that TE Lawrence once called home (it’s a National Trust writers’ museum now), or rumble through the Bovington tank museum, all within 15 minutes of base.

Kids in tow will likely get up to all sorts of monkey business at Monkey World ape rescue centre 15 minutes from the site, but are more likely to be seen five minutes away swinging around the waterpark and mud trail at Dorset Adventure Park. Less active kids, on the other hand, might prefer to wander along to the Blue Pool – also within five minutes – to meet the Wareham Bears (that’s 200 teddies in their own model village).
