Happy Campers

General

  • Peaceful secluded park over a 30-acre wildlife haven
  • Free fishing in the site's river and wildlife lakes in season
  • Woodlands walks, pitch and putt, library and boules all available

If there was an award for ‘most aptly named park’, Back-of-Beyond Touring Park in Dorset might just carry off the gong – and you'd likely give it an accolade or three for activities, location and quiet calm too.

Spread over 30 acres of Dorset woodland, river, heathland and lakes, Back-of-Beyond meanders over countryside naturally inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife: look out for deer, squirrels, moles, rabbits and the soaring sights of birds including the resident woodpecker. The site is dog friendly too (apart from in one of the wildlife-laden accommodation areas) and there's a 10-acre woodland area set aside especially for canines.

Anglers are welcome to try their luck on the park's lakes and river, but the site staff point out that casting off here means you'll be competing against the local wildlife, so guests are also welcome to use the site's small access part of the River Moors, which can be fished between 15 June and 15 March (bring your own equipment including a current fishing licence). Boules and a five-acre nine-hole pitch and putt course among the squirrels, moles and rabbits; hire the necessary bits and pieces for play on site.

The up-to-date facilities include three heated toilet and shower blocks with power showers and hot water, a private/disabled shower room, hairdryers, indoor and outdoor washing-up areas and a reception with morning bakery, lending library, newspapers, launderette and a shop selling bottled gas and essentials. All amenities are free to use and open 24 hours a day.

Essential supplies (food and beer) can be found at the two excellent pubs within walking distance; supermarkets, restaurants and two caravan and camping centres are within a few minutes by car.

    Disliked:

The rules were not clearly marked out of what you can’t and can do, also it was difficult to find level ground but that a minority as it’s wild camping .

From the manager...

Thank you so much for the great review. So glad you had a great stay.
The wild camping area is Emma's glade that is amongst old oaks and birch trees. In the 5 acres of Emma's glade we only allow a maximum of 20 tents. Therefore there is plenty of space for all and we have never had anyone say they couldn't find any level ground. Next time you come, ask one of the wardens to help you find a pitch that suits your needs.
With regard to the rules. On arrival you were handed a welcome book, with all the rules and t&cs you need to know. Again we have signage up for the main information you need. Wardens are always on hand to help if you are unsure of any points. Do come again.

An excellent site for on site add-ons but no motorhome service point07/22/2020

Cleanliness of site and friendly helpful staff. Ablutions block perfect and clean, maintained and cleaned regularly. Dog walking area perfect and plenty of room to let dogs roam. Level pitches and well spaced. Pop up bar, Fish and chip van visit and a pizza oven were a nice touch.

    Disliked:

The main road was so busy and volume of traffic made walking and cycling unpleasant. The bus rout was at the end of the lane but you would have to make changes to go anywhere other than Ringwood. Although well spaced pitches you felt surrounded all the time. No motorhome service point, you have to bucket the grey waste away.

From the manager...

Thank you for the review and your points.
Firstly, we do have a motor home service point. It is a drive over grey waste grate by reception as well as a water station. It is signed and it is in the welcome book given to you on arrival. I am sorry you missed this. Any of the wardens would have shown you this and the water filling station.
There are also cycle points from the park without need of going on the main road. Again, posters are on the information board, in your welcome book and the staff would happily of shown you these.
Ringwood is a bus terminal. So the bus goes there and you then connect to- Salisbury, Christchurch, Bournemouth, Poole etc. Don't really want to say it, but yes, in your welcome book given to you.
I am sorry you missed all these points and that had a affect on your stay.
Best wishes in your future travels.
