  • Small and friendly campsite on a family-run working farm

  • Milky Way and Big Sheep amusement parks within a 15-minute drive
It's easy to see the appeal of Hillside Camping – set on a small-scale family farm in the gorgeous north Devon countryside, this site is surrounded by spectacular scenery and within easy reach of a string of sandy beaches. Hillside Camping may be rural, but it's far from tricky to get to – the site is about five minutes' drive from the A39 road, so you'll be able to get out to places like Bideford (20 minutes' drive), Bude (half an hour) or further down the coast to Cornwall easily enough. Walkers will also appreciate how close the site is to the South West Coast Path, which passes through Buck's Mills three miles to the north. This wildlife haven is often visited by birds of prey, barn owls, woodpeckers and other feathered friends, while down on the ground there are also grazing cattle and free-range chickens and turkeys to admire. Stays at this peaceful place can be combined with locally-sourced produce to get a real taste of the local countryside, with fresh farm-laid eggs and the neighbour's honey both sold on site. Facilities available at Hillside Camping include toilets and running water. When you're ready for food, you're free to relax over a barbecue or open fire (as long as blocks are used to keep the grass from being burnt).

Local attractions

Getting out to Devon's boatloads of attractions and activities is an easy task indeed at Hillside Camping. Locally, the biggest draw (especially for families with kids) is probably the Milky Way Adventure Park (10 minutes' drive), an action-packed place full of entertaining activities and farm-themed japes. A quarter of an hour up the road in another direction is the Big Sheep, a family-friendly park with live shows, rides and up-close animal encounters. Older kids, teens and grownups may prefer to try out boarding basics at any one of north Devon's surf schools – Westward Ho! (20 minutes), Bude (30 minutes) and Croyde (55 minutes) are all good bets – while freshwater watersports fans are an easy 10-minute trip from North Devon Wake Park. Just outside the farm fields you will come across plenty of paths through the surrounding forests for long or short walks, while further afield there are more strolling spots to explore – as well as the South West Coast Path, you could set out in search of otters and birdlife along the Tarka Trail (20 minutes) or amble around Appledore and Northam Burrows Country Park (25 minutes).
