Colourful sunset over the lodge
Willow lodge
Dog-friendly site
Peace and quiet at sunset

  • Cosy self-contained lodge five minutes’ walk from Chawleigh in Devon
  • Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks both 35 minutes’ drive
  • Compact kitchen and private shower hut; dog-friendly fenced garden
When you’re looking for a cosy Devon bolthole, they don’t come much cosier than Willow Lodge, a bijou wooden abode with something of a Hobbiton feel to it, which is warm and welcoming whatever the weather, thanks to its comforting indoor fireplace. Found in a secluded corner of a working farm five minutes’ walk from the village of Chawleigh, it’s also got a fenced private garden that’s just the ticket for catching some rays on warm summer days. Sleeping up to four guests in one double (all linens supplied) plus two single bench beds in the living area (bring sleeping bags for the latter), Willow Lodge has a nattily designed and well-equipped kitchen corner with a fridge, toaster, kettle and small cooker, as well as an ensuite toilet. There are no modern-day distractions like wifi or a TV, so you can kick back and relax to a soundtrack of birdsong and look forward to exceptional sunsets on cloudless evenings. Steps away in the garden is a hut with a private shower; also outside you have a firepit, barbecue (there is an indoor option for use in colder months) and seating. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you and you can relax knowing that the garden is completely sealed off for their safety; please keep them under tight control around the farm. You can all enjoy lots of walks from the lodge, and there are pubs, a shop and post office in the village.

Liked Lovely lodge, like a Hobbit house, excellent secure outside space for our dog to explore, quiet & peaceful setting, comfortable bed. Seeing the beautiful cows in the field was an added bonus.

Disliked The indoor fire pit is very large & would probably make the lodge smell if you cooked on it, also we wouldn't have been able to sleep with the smell of wood burning as it's very small inside with only 2 rooms, a small log burner inside would have been better as there is a fire pit outside to use. The indoor seating area is very uncomfortable to sit on. No hot water in the lodge. Definitely needs a TV to watch in the evening's, we took our small TV which has an inbuilt DVD slot, so we took some action/comedy DVDs with us, there is no signal so you can't watch normal TV, if you were staying in the winter, it would be nice to watch TV after a full day out. Unfortunately the local pub which was only a 5 minute walk away was closed during our stay.

Liked We loved our stay at Willow Lodge. It offered everything we needed and more. Our children (11 & 5) loved the rainbow lights and seeing the cows each day. With lots to do nearby, it was an amazing place to stay come rain or shine. Sally and Tom were fantastic hosts and were on hand to make sure our trip went smoothly. We definitely recommend a visit and we would happily book to stay again. Thank you for a wonderful Easter break.

Liked Everything!! The Lodge is so unique and cute, the indoor firepit was so cozy. There is everything you could need provided, and the hosts was so welcoming. The enclosed garden was great for the dogs, we have got 2 pomeranian's and the garden was secure, even for tiny dogs. We loved it that much we have booked again. We are on 3 mobile, and we managed to get get enough signal to watch Netflix, but to simply be there and just chilling and chatting around the fire was so relaxing.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

Staying at Willow Lodge puts you in pole position to explore two national parks. Dartmoor (35 minutes’ drive) has almost limitless options for hiking and biking up to its rugged tors, as well as an intriguing collection of carousels at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre (50 minutes), art deco styling at Castle Drogo (45 minutes) and pitch-black skies for stargazing on clear nights. The softer landscapes of Exmoor (35 minutes) turn up strolls in the stunning Barle Valley (50 minutes), cute Exmoor ponies grazing wild and tours of National Trust-owned Dunster Castle (an hour) and its terraced gardens planted with subtropical plants. Pretty local towns begging to be explored include Barnstaple (40 minutes), where you can flash the cash at the artisan Pannier Market and neighbouring Butchers’ Row boutiques. Historic Exeter (45 minutes) is a hub for kayaking and canoeing along the River Exe, as well as the proud owner of an 11th-century cathedral and a fine collection of art at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. Young kids getting bored? Treat them to a day on the waterslides and go karts at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (55 minutes).
