  • Adults-only site on a 1.5-acre paddock in the Devon countryside
  • A 15-minute drive from Kingsbridge and 20 minutes from Salcombe
  • Stays on a working beef and sheep farm with scenic South Hams views
When you next find yourself hankering for fab West Country views, clear your schedule and zip down to Devon for a stint at Markstone Farm Caravan and Camping, a family-run farm site on the edge of the South Hams. Peace and quiet here are assured by a rural location and status as a total kid-free zone – without any under-18s around, your sweet repose in all that gorgeous green space should be blessedly undisturbed. Any younglings you do spot roaming the farm will be of the four-legged variety, with Aberdeen Angus calves and woolly-faced Dorset lambs bounding around the fields in spring. This welcoming spot also has a fair few practical bits and bobs to make your stay easier, including a well-kept toilet block, water point, firepit and waste disposal station. Make Markstone Farm Caravan and Camping your base if you intend to venture around south Devon's splendid seaside towns – both Kingsbridge and Salcombe can be reached by road within 20 minutes, with jaunts to pretty villages like Bigbury (20 minutes) and Bantham (20 minutes) also on the cards. Scoop up snacks at Aveton Gifford stores (five minutes), where there's also a village watering hole for pub-cooked dinners.

Route directions

From the A38 (southbound): follow signs for Ivybridge Park and Ride/Modbury. Next, follow signs for Modbury. You will then come to a crossroads marked Kittaford Cross – go straight on. You will come to an area signed California Cross with a BP garage on your left and the Cali Inn pub on your right. From here, head toward Modbury and take the second left fork in the road (signposted Bigbury). Continue up the road and take the 2nd left turn marked Aveton Gifford, Chillaton and Lixton. The marker posted is signed Hangman’s Cross. Carry on, passing Cuckoo Farm, Greenlands Plant Nursery and Higher Wizaller Farm. You will then see a stone wall on your left with a Markstone Farm sign in grey slate. There is a track running down the side of the farm – ignore it and enter the farm through the wooden gates instead. Come through the gates and follow the driveway on your right.

Local attractions

If you’ve not had enough hiking on the footpaths that crisscross the fields surrounding the site, fear not – there's a lot more where that came from. Motor down to Salcombe (20 minutes) for a circuit around Snapes Point, where panoramas over the South Hams hills and Kingsbridge estuary are a fine thing to behold. Inland, kick off Dartmoor explores in Ivybridge (25 minutes), a key stop-off point on the long-distance Two Moors Way. Next, to Kingsbridge (15 minutes) and its streets stacked with independent shops and galleries, and where where a twice-monthly Saturday farmers’ market makes a top spot for sampling local Devon delicacies. There are plentiful paddling opportunities on offer here too – chat to specialists about paddleboarding tours or take a bit of coaching in the art of canoeing. History buffs, meanwhile, may be drawn to the storied ramparts of Dartmouth Castle (half an hour) and Berry Pomeroy (40 minutes). This latter spot is rumoured to be haunted – if in need of less spooky historic times, try a reassuring ride on the Dartmouth Steam Railway (30 minutes) instead.
