Ah, Croyde – the mere mention of this lovely little village is liable to perk up the ears of surfer types, who’ve no doubt heard about the splendid waves around this corner of Devon. Those same surfer types (along with those who’d like to learn the art of standing up on water, and anyone else that’s keen on the coast) should also find their ears pricking up at the offerings of Camping @ Croyde Bay, a friendly site in the village centre. The waters at Croyde beach, around 400 metres away, are famed as being fab for both keen surfers and novices, and that also makes this area a top pick for family holidays. The well-established site is a family-friendly place too, in a spot that’s easily walkable to the village’s shops and pubs but quiet enough for a good night’s kip. Facilities include purpose-built toilets and showers, and a much-loved ladies' dressing room with a mirror, power points, hair dryers and hair straighteners. There is an additional hot outdoor shower for sandy wetsuits, a drying area, plenty of fresh drinking water and a washing-up area for dealing with dishes. Guests can also use the communal freezers and mobile phone charging points. As for the local area, it’s not all about Croyde: Putsborough beach (another corker) is also within walking distance, and it’s a couple of miles to Saunton for more sandy times and a gorgeous golf course.

Level gravel pitches for motor homes views of the hills but not the sea.

Liked: A lovely site at the top of the road. Grass is lovely and soft. The site has levelled tiers to camp on.
A lovely toilet block with individual showers, and two family showers, toilets, washing up area and outside shower to rinse off if you’ve been in the sea.
Surf and body boards to hire. And most of the tent pitches have electric hook up if required. I didn’t need as only stayed two nights. Also free WiFi which was great.
In reception there is a microwave and a coffee/tea hot chocolate machine (extra charge) this closes at 8pm not 9 as stated on the post. But a great find.

Disliked: I had paid for a late check out from standard 10:30 to 12 (£5)
This was my first trip in my campervan I wanted the late checkout as we had been getting rain during the night and wanted my storage tent to dry out. And didn’t realise how long it would take to pack up.

The site was fairly empty. But the owner wasn’t happy that I was running late to pack up. Hinting did I want to pay another £5 to stay to 6pm. Which I didn’t. I was just over half an hour late leaving and was made to feel very rushed.
Unlike most of the other sites I visited on my ten day trip. I felt this was a bit of a downer in my experience.

We offer late check out at very affordable rates and it's very popular. It takes the pressure off on rainy departure days and gives people until 6pm at just £10 per pitch. Disliked: The showers could be a bit warmer. We thought the 10.30 checkout was a little early if you have tents etc to dismantle.

Liked: Stu was very friendly and accommodating, rearranging a few pitches so that my two friends and I could pitch together in our vans. Facilities were all clean, well appointed and well maintained. Location was brilliant with the beaches and village centre a short walk away.

Local attractions

So… the beach? Thought so. Croyde’s one of those fab places that’s equally good for a paddle, a swim or a surf. Experienced boarding types can usually find some good waves down here, and there are shallower sections where newbies can find their feet (with the help of one of the village’s surf schools, ideally). For a rest from the waves, take a walk out to Baggy Point (about 45 minutes on foot), join a game at the village’s beach volleyball school or drive for 10 minutes to the rural pursuits at Borough Farm Sheepdog and Falconry Displays. Alternatively, make it all about the sea with a coasteering day from Croyde, a ride on the beach at Woolacombe or a sea safari from Ilfracombe (both 15 minutes’ drive). The beaches at Putsborough and Saunton Sands are both about five minutes’ drive away and there are some cracking walks to be had on the South West Coast Path around here too.
