  • Peaceful site on a working sheep farm in the South Downs National Park
  • Bignor Roman Villa 25 minutes’ drive; Bognor Regis 35 minutes
  • No access by vehicles, only on foot or by bike; communal kitchen
What is it that estate agents always say? ‘Location, location, location.’ And the remote location of Gumber Farm is certainly outstanding: there is no vehicular access to this small sheep farm within the National Trust’s Slindon Estate, slap bang in the middle of the South Downs National Park. Peace and quiet are pretty much guaranteed… Because there is no access by vehicles, you can only rock up to the site on foot or by bike, having left your car at Bignor Hill or Northwood Junction. The one-and-a-half-mile hike from either car park ought to give you a good idea of the splendid trails that await in the area: some through woodland carpeted with colourful wildflowers, others crossing farmland scattered with ancient remains like Stane Street, a Roman road. The nearest supermarket is in Fontwell (about five miles away), so you might want to have enough provisions to see you through a couple of days at least. In addition to a communal kitchen with kettle, gas hob, sink and recycling facilities (plus plenty of pots, pans, crockery and cutlery), there is a barbecue. You can also get your own campfire going. In fact, that’s a pretty sweet way to spend an evening at the farm: sitting around the fire, gazing up at the spectacular dark skies overhead. Other facilities include a toilet and shower block (remember to bring your own towels, though) and a drying room.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked Didn’t say as there was no way I could carry all my camping equipment from a car park to the site. Totally impossible

From the manager: Good Evening, it is very clear from our listing in here that there is no vehicle access to the campsite and that the nearest car parks are 1.5mile hike in. As tenants of the National Trust this is a condition of our tenancy that has been in place for the last thirty years I believe. You also should have received a text message to make sure you were aware there’s no vehicle access as some people fail to read it in the listing. As listing….There is no vehicular access to the site whatsoever for visitors and so is only accessible on foot or cycle. Which makes Gumber Bothy the perfect tranquil place to escape to. The nearest you can park is approximately 1.5miles away, either at Bignor Hill car park (SU974129) or Northwood Junction (SU959098) where the tarmac road runs out.
Text that you should have received “You are aware that there’s no vehicle access to the campsite I assume?”
If you had called me or caught either of the wardens on site I’m sure we could have assisted with your kit in some way. Instead you chose not to get in touch and rate a 1/10 review on here. Gumber is predominantly used by those on foot, cycle or horse back and most guests love its remoteness. Should you wish is discuss further please get in touch tomorrow. You have my details. Best wishes the Gumber Team

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Simple, easy. Good place. Great facilities. Friendly people.

Disliked In a star gazing low light zone, the house put and left an outside light on which gave the background light you want to avoid.

Liked Great location just off the South Downs way with excellent showers and a well setup kitchen. Drying room would be really handy at other times too.

Disliked No so much a dislike but an FYI if you are camping there are no plugs where you charge phones etc and there is basically no Vodafone coverage at the site

Local attractions

Arundel (20 minutes’ drive) is dominated by a castle whose earliest parts (such as the keep and the gateway) date back to the 1100s. The elegant interiors, largely reworked in the late 19th century, house collections of paintings by the likes of Gainsborough and Canaletto, as well as furniture and tapestries. Discovered by chance in the 1810s, Bignor Roman Villa (25 minutes’ drive or a one-hour hike) is renowned for its well-preserved floor mosaics, which depict gladiatorial battles, animals and intricate swirls and geometric motifs. In summer, the farmland around the villa also features a sunflower maze. If you fancy a day at the seaside, Bognor Regis (35 minutes) has a pebbly beach and a pier with an amusement arcade. Along the promenade there are also a miniature golf course, inflatable structures and a miniature train (useful if you want to save your feet ahead of the walk back to the site), plus plenty of food stalls. For a sandy beach, head to West Wittering (40 minutes).
