Touring area

General

  • Dog-friendly park an hour from London and 300 yards from the beach
  • Clubhouse including kids' corner with TV, video games and pool tables
  • Café, clubhouse, hot showers, football pitch and dog-walking area

Frazzled by capital city life but don't want to spend six or seven hours driving to a holiday by the seaside? Come and be dazzled by New Romney Caravan Park in Kent, a piffling hour from London and another piffling 300 yards from the two-mile stretch and sandy dunes of Greatstone beach.

It's all family run by a team which does its utmost to ensure guests do like to be beside the seaside, mixing a rural Kent Marshes setting with up to date comfy facilities and stuff to do on site – you might like to while away many a lazy hour in the cute Boat Shed café...

The level grass accommodation field catches the evening sun (for snoozes in deckchairs while someone else sorts out the barbie), and has easy access to the park toilets, hot showers, launderette and washing-up facilities as well as a roomy football pitch for the kids and/or energetic parents. If you're bringing the dog, a spacious area has been set aside on site for walks (Greatstone beach a couple of minutes' walk away is dog-friendly too; woof).

And if you want to keep the kids busy, take the crew along to the Hoy Club clubhouse, which serves meals and snacks, and comes with a separate area for the kids to expend energy: a TV, interactive video games and pool tables are all here to tire them out nicely.

Lovely location, on the beach, spa shop very close. Park on beach.
Club house and park on site.
Initial appearance of toilet block/showers good, with daily closure for cleaning.
Generally a good site with a few glitches.

    Disliked:

Pitch size a bit small although we did have dog exercise area for kids to play in.
Although we had a friendly arrival with reception lady, the staff in the shop were not so friendly and rude to children!
Walked in the clubhouse (two adults, one from each group for social distancing) had the most unfriendly welcome with “you can only come in if you’re gonna drink!”
The worst part was, having to get tokens to pay for shower! They are only 50p but is an issue if you just want to shower feet off after a trip to the beach but don’t have enough tokens.
You only get 4 mins and have to top up if you want longer, just a bit of a pain when you are managing children in a very hot cubicle.
The showers don’t let you adjust heat so you have to have a hot shower.... too hot for very young children.
The toilet checks weren’t great, I noticed feaces marks that stayed there all weekend, even after the clean, and dust evident on the floor.
On two occasions there was no toilet roll in one block and no hand soap in the other so you had to swap to wash hands.

Toilet and shower blocks were clean with sanitisation wipes in place. Layout of the park was good, good children’s play area. Spa shop only 5 mins walk away. Good dog exercise area.

    Disliked:

Ground for tents very uneven with some areas having bricks and rocks sticking out. Toilets were cleaned first day we were there but by third day there was no soap and toilet roll. The smell from local farmers was very strong at times and a local dog was barking most of the night for both nights we stayed which can’t be helped by the campsite. Club house staff member not very welcoming. When visiting the camp cafe, tried to order six milkshakes and was told by staff member that we couldn’t have them as she didn’t know how to make them. You have to pay 50p for 4 minutes use of the shower - not included in your pitch price.

It was clean and friendly and spacious. I liked that there was a shop at the end of the road which was very handy indeed. The staff was friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

I didn't like the fact you couldn't change the heat for the showers, so I had no where to bath my 3 year old as them showers were way too hot for him. Didnt like the fact that things wasnt very clear I.e we hired a fire pit was asked to pay £5 and that was it then it was taken back and we had to go back to the hut to repay for it for each night. We also hired a cool box but when we collected it she advised it might work it might not she didnt know. The club house was closed 90% of the time I was there and there wasnt no evening entertainment in the club house even though it said online it would be open.

Local attractions

Active types can take their pick from land and water activities in the area, such as pedalling the many flat bike routes or walking along the old military canal of Romney Marsh, and viewsome golf at the championship golf course at Littlestone between Romney Marsh and the English Channel.

Zip along in a jetski on the surface of nearby Lydd Lake or at Greatstone beach, also properly gorgeous for kicking up sand on horseback. On the water, have at it at kitesurfing, sailing, or sea fishing for eels, school bass and whiting (dig in the flats at low tide to find lugworm to use as bait).

Dungeness, a few miles along the coast, and lovely Dover a 45-minute drive away are both cracking to cast off from too: fish for mackerel at Dungeness in summer or for bass closer to shore; and mackerel, bass, dogfish, cod and plaice from the Prince of Wales and Admiralty Pier at Dover.

This is a cracking region for species spotting with nature reserves at both New Romney and Dungeness (look out for the lighthouse at the latter), and hundreds of thousands of migrating seabirds landing on the Kent Marshes every winter. The butterflies and falcons of the Rare Breeds Centre at Ashford are also well worth a squint.

Must see

  • Port Lympne Wild Animal Park (11.5 kilometres)
