General

  • Peaceful and scenic surroundings close to woodlands and beaches
  • Two pubs and a village shop within 10 minutes' walk
  • 20 minutes from Canterbury and the beach at Hythe

Come to Kent for scenic and peaceful surrounds for strolling and family days... and might you like a woodland walk or a beach day too? Have the lot at small and serene Knowler Farm, along with a setting right in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but a nifty 20-minute drive from Canterbury.

This is a firmly rural spot, in an area popular with walkers and cyclists, and within easy reach of Kent highlights like Howletts Wild Animal Park and Leeds Castle. The beach at Hythe is 20 minutes' drive away on the south coast and Whitstable is within 40 minutes on the north. (And if you're escaping from London for the weekend, you can zip down here in under two hours: hail the train from St Pancras and get a bus to the farm from outside the Rose and Crown in Canterbury.)

The site is on the edge of the quiet village of Stelling Minnis, where there's a shop, a post office and two food pubs highly recommended by the Knowler Farm team; one, the Hop Pocket, also has regular live music. Davison's Mill, 10 minutes' walk away, dishes up cream teas on summer Sundays.

We were given a nice large shady area by the friendly owner Wayne to pitch, he also took the children to meet the donkeys & other animals, it was a really lovely experience, gave us a tip to go for a walk to see their village windmill, beautiful area, lovely & quiet, everyone very friendly
Full covid19 restrictions in place with plenty of hand sanitizer and disinfectant for the facilities

    Disliked:

Maybe more toilets would be good as only 2 and with the number of people it was fine

We stayed on the ‘wild camping’ field which was fabulous. A large open flat field with rough mown grass. Plenty of space. The ‘long drop’ toilets and showers in a horse box were very well put together, clean and functional. Highly recommended, would have stayed for longer if we hadn’t the euro tunnel to catch.

    Disliked:

    Can’t think of anything

From the manager...

Thank you for your great review and your great photos. I think almost everyone is loving the "space" our Wild Camping site offers especially when we've all been cooped up for so long, loads of space for the dreaded "social distancing" :( The eco toilets and showers have been a big hit glad you found them clean and functional that is the aim, wild but not too wild camping!!

Aaawwww that's so lovely, I can actually tell you that Wayne loves his summer campsite host job, he's always completely knackered by the end of the season and usually 1.1/2 stone lighter but always happy :) Really glad you found the site clean and thank you for putting up those great photo's, it really gives people an idea of how we run things, so thank you.

Having booked for Knowler Farm, we actually chose to pitch on the nearby Knowler Wild Camping site. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay (4 nights) and Wayne was very friendly and helpful. The composting toilets and converted horse box showers were novel and clean and there was loads of space in the field in which we were camped. We made use of the facilities in the village (pub and convenience store) and we enjoyed walks and runs from our doorstep into the lovely countryside. The site is very conveniently situated for touring East Kent and the both the North and South coastlines. We will definitely return and highly recommend the site to others.

    Disliked:

There was nothing we disliked, except for a noisy party on our first night.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for that kind review, we are so pleased you liked the Wild Camp Site and Wayne's composting loos and showers. We are really trying to be as eco as possible and encourage people who stay to do the same. We are very pleased that you will be returning.
Regards. Thank you for the kind review.

Local attractions

Nature spotters will find species aplenty around the 124-acre common and the countryside surroundings of local village Stelling Minnis, an ancient pastureland still used for grazing in more modern times. Several ponds on the minnis are home to toads and newts; around the grassland and woodland, look out for voles and badgers, weasels and shrews, woodpeckers, nightingales and barn and long-eared owls.

Culture seekers can see shows at the Gulbenkien or Marlowe theatres, both just outside Canterbury, or head into the city to roam around its ancient sites including Canterbury Cathedral. If you're up for hearing the story of how Chaucer developed and wrote his famed tales, the Canterbury Tales tour runs throughout the year daily from St Margaret's Street.

Those off to the nearest beach at Hythe should hop on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway to chuff along almost 14 miles to Dungeness, via the Kent coastal spots of Dymchurch, St. Mary's Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands.
