  • Off-grid site in a quiet meadow five minutes' drive from Charing
  • 15 minutes' drive from Leeds castle; half an hour from Canterbury
  • 16th-century country inn 10 minutes' walk away for drinks and food
Sometimes all you need is a bit of space… a quiet space in which to set up camp, stoke up a fire and settle in to slumber. (Although maybe a nearby pub wouldn’t go amiss, eh?) And that’s what you’ll get at Hill Top Farm Wild Camping’s tiny site, an off-grid place so stripped back it doesn’t have any running water, toilets or showers. What it does have is plenty of peace and quiet – your pitch is in the corner of a meadow, accessed via a little country lane (blissfully far from the madding traffic, although the A20 and M20 aren’t that far away for easy ins and outs). The folks here have made a point of putting you on a level part of the field, and trimming the grass down for straightforward pitching and car parking. If you’ve been propelled here by pedal power you can keep bikes safe and dry in the animal shelter. And that pub? Well, it’s a mere 10-minute trot to a fab 16th-century country inn for pints and plates. If you’d rather stay plonked in your peaceful place, you’re welcome to sizzle something on a small barbie, or pick up a takeaway from the chippie five minutes away in Lenham.

Noake's Meadow non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great location in the heart of Kent countryside, The site was easy to find along a very quiet country lane, The host, David made us feel very welcome and for a small fee he can provide a barrow full of logs for the fire pit. The pitch was clean, tidy and had ample space for parking our motorcycles. There is an excellent pub - The Bowl Inn a short walk from the site. The food there is fantastic. Much recommended if you like your camping on the wild side.

Local attractions

Here to hike or bike? Hardy walkers or cyclists might be seeking somewhere for a stopover on the 119-mile Pilgrims’ Way or the 156-mile North Downs Way, both of which pass through nearby Charing, but there are plenty of more leisurely routes nearby too (including that walk to the local pub). For plants and flowers of a more cultivated fashion, it’ll take you 15 minutes or so to drive to Doddington Place Gardens (where they also serve up rather fine cakes). Next door is the Hawking Centre, a fab place for falconry demos and handling experiences. You’ll likely need to set aside a whole day if you’re planning a visit to Leeds Castle (15 minutes away) – around the 500-acre estate are heaps of things to do, including a maze, some excellent playgrounds, punting and a unique dog collar museum (and not forgetting the castle itself of course). City and seaside aren’t too far away either – get in the car and you can be in Canterbury or wandering on Whitstable beach in around half an hour.
