General

  • Surrounded by the scenery of the peaceful New Forest
  • Activities including zorbing, archery and bug hunts
  • Gym, spa, zipwire and two pools

The New Forest is, but of course, fab enough. But when you can retreat back to base for a Jacuzzi session or beauty treatment, or indeed spend days on base getting stuck into activities such as kayaking, archery and, er, bug hunting... it's fairly safe to say that you've found your New Forest calling.

Such forested fun is at Fordingbridge's Sandy Balls Holiday Village, among the spectacular scenery of the forest and set up for couples, friends and families to have long weekends, midweek breaks or (recommended) longer hols among tiptop facilities and absolutely loads to do. Off site, it's about 25 minutes' drive through the forest to Paultons Park and Peppa Pig World, 30 to the New Forest Wildlife Park, and about the same to coast and sandy... toes at Christchurch.

The packed activity schedule at Sandy Balls includes varied shenanigans like walking, cycling, bug hunts, arts and crafts activities, football sessions, horse riding, kayaking, archery, and – if you're here with those you're soppy about – laser combat games. A calendar of special events takes place throughout the year too, and entertainment is available every day during the school holidays and at weekends all year round.

Might you now be ready for some pampering? Indoor and outdoor pools, a Jacuzzi, sauna and a beauty suite await your tuckered out self: after full recuperation, you've a pick of two restaurants on site in Aubreys Restaurant and cosy country pub the Woodside Inn. Takeaway and a well-stocked country shop are available too if by this point you just need to stagger back to base after all your active adventures.

Didn’t get a chance as they cancelled our booking as they are building over the touring pitches.

    Disliked:

Booking was cancelled due to site getting rid of all touring pitches. So disappointed as it was a lovely site, especially in winter as not many places are open all year.

Pitch was superb, plenty of space, hook up and water point at every pitch. Site well maintained with lots of toilet & shower blocks so never far to walk if needed. Site was quiet but it is end of season so not sure how it would be at peak times. Swimming pool was brilliant. Changing areas could do with updating as they’re looking a bit tired but they’re clean which is important. No family changing areas which was a shame. Village shop well stocked with absolutely anything you might need during your stay. My kids loved the arcade!!! And free soft play was also a bonus, it’s small but good for a rainy day! The restaurant was great, lovely food and pleasant helpful staff. Definitely recommended. All in all a few small improvements could be made but for a off peak week away it was fabulous!

Plenty of activities for the children to do during the day and evening, the village square was really convenient with everything in one place. There were lots of cleaning/laundry facilities in easy walking distance to the pitch.

Great site in a beautiful location, well placed for exploring the New Forest.

The site is well laid out, with good footpaths so you can avoid any traffic, make sure you explore the paths leading out of the accommodation areas, head over the to Giant's Grave for a great view and continue to follow the path down to the "recreation field" to find a beautiful location next to the river.

Hired some bikes from the very well stocked on site activity centre, very reasonably priced (no more than £40 for two mountain bikes, a child's trailer and a toddler seat for the whole day). The guy in the shop was very helpful and informative, giving us lots of advice on which route to take and things along the way.

The alpacas are gorgeous, make sure you sign up for one of their walks, the guide was very passionate, friendly and informative and our family had a great time.

We ate at the restaurant on one night, I think it's been recently renovated but it was immaculate and the food and service very good.

The bar area was lovely, more like a country pub than the usual holiday park bar, lots of entertainment on every night and very child friendly (one tip, if you turn up while the bingo is on and can't get a table/seat hang around and it seems that quite a few disappear once the bingo has finished, we managed this on both nights and stayed for the entertainment with a decent table).

If you get a chance to see "Mad 4 Animals" I would highly recommend it, the guy is completely nuts, but in a good way!

    Disliked:

This was our first time at Sandy Balls in our motorhome, but I understand that they are no longer providing touring pitches so unfortunately will be our last which is a shame.

Our pitch seemed to be one of the worst in the field, although we booked late and appreciate it was half term, we were in one corner, at the end of thew access road, which on one hand should be good but were right next to steps which led back to the road so had a fair amount of foot traffic past and wasn't a great position with kids.

They ripped up the playground opposite with no warning while we were there which was a shame and quite upsetting for our kids who wanted to use it and our youngest who was scared of the heavy construction noises. Heard lots of other parents complaining too, I can only imagine this is part of the master plan to replace the touring pitches with statics for the new season.

The facilities are great and there’s lots of space at the site. We enjoyed being at a fully serviced pitch.

    Disliked:

You could tell the site is getting rid of campers and touring caravans next month. The bushes dividing the pitches had all been cut down which meant there was no privacy. The toilets seemed to have a plumbing issue as there was constantly a sound of flushing water. The food was only luke warm when we ate in the only dog friendly restaurant/bar.
