Watercress Lodges Campsite: Pitches

General

  • Family-run site by the Watercress Line: see the trains from your pitch
  • A minute's walk from steam engine events of Ropley station
  • Spotless amenities and friendly vibe 20 minutes from Winchester

Do you have a Thomas the Tank Engine fan or mini trainspotter in the family? They might just go up in a puff of excited smoke at Hampshire’s Watercress Lodges Campsite, so close to the historic Watercress Line that you’ll be able to see the trains’ steam from your tent pitch. Engine-ious.

No need to be out of puff when tracking other activities in the area either, as the line’s Ropley station and its railway bridge are both a minute or two’s walk from the site, and it has regular events for all ages including Thomas the Tank Engine and Wallace and Gromit days, dining evenings, real ale trains and Santa bookings. Just the ticket then for a well-conducted family hol…

The site is on land the Graham family has farmed for four generations and opened as a campsite in 2014, pulling out all the stops to make this a friendly site with a family vibe. Facilities including the new shower and toilet block are spotlessly kept by Hannah and her team, who are on hand if guests have any problems or questions.

Off site, once kids have let off steam at the railway, the small town of New Alresford is three miles away for supplies, shops and pubs, and the city of Winchester within a 20-minute drive.

Level pitches, well keep grass areas, pleasing looking site.

    Disliked:

Check in was down to luck as a grounds maintenance man turned up after an hour sat in the car and told us where to pitch as the contact number was unattainable. Sharing toilets/shower block with the general public from the train station and was only cleaned once in the 2 night stay. Didn't like not being able to park close to the tent and having to park under over hanging trees so car got covered in tree sap.

Such a unique campsite, a real novelty. You can chose your pitch space. Not a massive campsite but plenty of space. Literally on the side of the station so you get to watch the trains which the kids loved. Highly recommend.

    Disliked:

The paths around Ropley station are made up of crushed coal (not a fab idea for kids) which meant that was dragged back to the campsite and when the kids ran around in the grass when playing games they came back quite sooty and black. This is all part of the experience so it’s not a complaint just a side note. The toilet facilities were the toilets for Ropley Station so not just used by the fellow campers, they were cleaned twice a day so couldn’t complain about the condition at all.

The safari tent was exactly what we was looking for. On arrival it was just perfect, we had a bottle Prosecco and some mince pies. Perfect little touch. The lady who runs it is just so lovely she asked us on lots of occasion if we was ok and if she could do anything for us.
I highly recommend the tent and the campsite.
Also at night watching the steam trains is magical.
