What customers say

A chilled, rustic spot for proper wild camping. Hosts Elizabeth & Ted get rave reviews for their helpfulness, as do the private, natural pitches brimming with wildlife. Basic facilities, incl. compost loos. Perfect for eco-conscious folk wanting off-grid peace, not glitz.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (solo)

Liked Owners were friendly enough. Help you out if they can. The location is close to the beach and a convenience store up the road.

Disliked Moment I arrived (around 1pm) till around half 8 at night all I could hear was awful loud music coming from another camper close by. It went on for hours and ruined the first day. Could see other campers weren't happy but owners said nothing about it. This place is billed as peaceful and quiet but I received nothing of the sort during first day.

From the manager: Thank you for your remarks. We very much regret that you enjoyment was spolied. I was, however, very confused by your description of the circumstances. I have no recollection of campers on our site ever playing loud music.

You are quite right about our rule of ' no loud music to be played on site' and we have found that our campers follow this rule and we have never had to bring it to notice and to enforce it. Yet you clearly state that the music was coming from another camper 'close by'. On re-reading your post and noting the times that you helpfully include: 1pm till 8pm I realise that you must be referring to an event which took place on the neighbouring caravan park, Eastland Meadows. This was a one off, so called 'Family Day' which was unprecedented in our eleven years at this location. This event seemed to take the form of a festival at which live bands were playing and which involved the use of substantial amplification. The location of this P.A. was about two hundred and fifty yards from our solo camper pitches. The sound may have been mistaken to have be nearer than it was due to the clarity and lack of distortion. On being taken by surprise by this unwanted and intrusive sound this latter quality did, however, help in allowing it to be tolerable for many.

I do wish that you had consulted us on the day, whether complaining or just asking for an explanation. Through the course of the day I spoke to many of our campers and, although most would have preferred to do without the background music, everyone I spoke to felt that they were shocked at the start up of the music but found that it was within bounds of toleration, being fairly innocuous easy going tunes sung in by competent and dedicated vocalists. A small number of our guests found the music to be decent quality and enjoyable once they resigned themselves to it.

WE did not approve and were taken by surprise by a situation that was out of our control. Our frustration was eased and we felt reassured by these comments from guests. No-one complained directly to us and those who did ask for an explanation seemed satisfied. Nevertheless we will be in dialogue with Eastland Meadows management about the issue.

Great place to unwind.

Hector electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This was actually an electric camper van pitch called Hector in an amazing organic smallholding. I was next to a shedding eucalyptus tree in an area of stunning biodiversity on the Dengie Peninsula. The chickens roam free and of course they crow in the morning which I loved. Elizabeth and Ted are great hosts who have kindly offered the opportunity to share their amazing space. I suspect the place will get mixed reviews depending on people’s expectations. It is indeed back to basics and that is much to its credit. It is quirky and individual and welcoming. The passages between the pitches were even hand cut with a scythe. I sincerely thank my hosts for the opportunity to stay and would have been happy to pay more. My phone signal was strong and I had uninterrupted wifi. The ground was uneven but that was not a problem to me.

Disliked I have my own facilities (including shower, toilet and hot water) onboard and therefor was not dependent on the compost lavatory. There was some noise escape from the neighbouring site (which is beyond the control of the hosts and I do not say a a criticism of this site). I would have preferred a larger pitch but recognise the sizing allows more people to share the experience. My view was interrupted by a fixed tent but I am grappling here to find criticism as the experience as a whole was wonderful.

From the manager: thank you very much indeed. for those thoughts. Hector pitch has been extended taking into account your experience. The hot shower unit is now up and running, and we will look forward to seeing you again.

Ninian's Paddock non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (family, firepit)

Liked A fab spot, calm and quiet, where you can get back to nature but where you feel safe and supported.

Disliked Cockerels crowing early! They added to the ambience though!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: so glad to hear that you felt safe and secure ... by the way , our shower is now fully operational and there for you next time.. and our fire festival takes place on January 6th; twelve fires in a very big circle around the paddock where you camped.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (solo)

Liked Quirky vibe! It is peaceful indeed and purposefully basic , fresh water and compost loo all ok but hadn’t realised there was a hot water urn too!
Each pitch is individual and uniquely placed with care , it’s a small holding so there are chickens and a a cock- so be ready for that!
Also fascinated to see the site also used as a classic Citroen place of rest! Definitely my kind of place

Disliked Nothing- walk to the pub took 20 mins!

Local attractions

Spreading between the estuaries of the River Blackwater and the River Crouch is Dengie National Nature Reserve (five minutes’ drive). This expansive area of tidal flats and saltmarshes is a birdwatcher’s dream, with large numbers of Brent geese and grey plovers, plus turnstones and oystercatchers. For a vintage day out, take a trip on a steam or diesel train along the heritage Mangapps Railway (25 minutes). In addition to just under a mile of standard-gauge track with restored stations and period equipment, there is a museum with an extensive signalling collection – it should keep trainspotters happy for a few hours. Bradwell beach (half an hour's walk) is a splendid place for a picnic on the sand or a walk along the nature trail. At the other side of the peninsula, Burnham-on-Crouch (20 minutes' drive) is a quiet riverside town with an art trail, a museum and some lovely places to eat and drink by the water. You may also like to stop by at Clayhill Vineyard, a little way outside the town, for a tour, a tasting or a bite to eat.
