What customers say

A neat, safe spot for ferry folk. Friendly staff, quiet vibe and big, flat pitches get rave reviews. Facilities are clean but a bit dated. Popular pub/cafe, but check opening hours. Great for a stopover or seeing the sights.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Clean and tidy and not too big. We had pitch no10. Furthest away from washroom and tucked away in the corner area but that made it quieter as no passing foot traffic. There is a village pub/coffee shop that you can access directly from the site. Limited opening hours but was open when we fancied a drink.

Disliked It’s a stopover spot for the Harwich to Hook ferry. So a lot of early leavers and late arrivals. Didn’t bother us as we were in the corner but I’d imagine it would be a bit frustrating if you had neighbours on the ferry.
A lot of reviews downgrade the wash rooms. I’d have to agree, they are very basic and really need an overhaul.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Booking and information was good and was met when through the entry gate to be directed to the booked pitch.

Disliked The male showers could do with a bit of TLC but worked. (And was pleased that there was no timed water flow that is often found ion other sites). Although not intrinsic to the camping pitches I thought that the adjoining Strangers Bar lacked a choice of beers (keg or cask) so that was disapointing. I thought the bottled beer I chose was overpriced.

Local attractions

Here for a longer stay? Pull on the hiking boots to ramble the heathland in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour’s drive), or walk along the River Stour to the famous riverside cottage featured in Constable’s ‘The Hay Wain’ in Flatford and Constable Country (20 minutes). Raise your activity levels by challenging each other to kayak races at Alton Water Sports Centre (25 minutes). Turn your attention to the coastline and stroll the sandy expanse at Wrabness Foreshore (10 minutes) to the green-tiled House for Essex, a beachside folly designed by Grayson Perry. Play the amusement arcades on the Victorian pier at Clacton-on-Sea (25 minutes), and if the weather’s showing promise, have a laze on the sand at Walton-on-the-Naze (20 minutes). And you’ve got many options for rainy days too. Get under cover to see railway memorabilia in the former Victorian station at the East Anglian Railway Museum (half an hour), or tour the interactive history exhibits at Colchester Castle (25 minutes).
