  • Family camping on an organic egg farm in the South Downs National Park
  • A 20-minute drive to Brighton, and 25 minutes to Barcombe Mills
  • Communal dining area, kids’ activities, bar, street food in summer
Flat fields with spacious grass pitches. A rural location in the gorgeous South Downs National Park. A street vendor serving delicious food on summer weekends. Dogs very welcome. Four very good reasons to settle upon The Macs Farm if you’re looking for a comfy and family-friendly East Sussex hideaway º in this case on an organic egg farm. Each pitch on the field has its own firepit for you to cook on and cosy up around with family and friends into the evening. A wood box with kindling, logs, matches and firelighters is provided. As well as a hand-built shower block with washing-up sinks and fridges for you to keep food fresh, the field has a renovated chicken shed for those days when you need a bit of cover, all cosily laid out with sofas, tables and chairs. There’s lots of stuff going on across the farm. Central hub of the campsite is your check-in point at the Nest Box, which doubles as a licensed bar with daytime snacks and ice creams on sale too. As well as the aforementioned street-food stall, there’s live music on selected summer evenings, as well as activities for kids like feeding the free-range hens, pond dipping and yoga sessions. The site is car free, keeping the local wildlife – look out for the resident barn owl at twilight – and your kids completely safe as they run around the field. Car parking is separate, so when you arrive, pile all of your bits and bobs into one of the wheelbarrows provided and push it over to your pitch.

Local attractions

Itching to get out on foot? The Macs Farm allows direct access to the South Downs National Park for hikes up to Ditchling Beacon (50 minutes’ walk), the highest point in East Sussex. Alternatively, amble across ancient South Downs Way downlands to the Jack and Jill Windmills at Clayton (an hour) and on to pretty Pyecombe village (an hour and 15 minutes). For all things water-centric, Barcombe Mills (25 minutes) on the River Ouse is a popular spot for wild swimming, paddleboarding or hiring a rowing boat to explore upstream. If the kids are insisting on the beach, Brighton (20 minutes’ drive) is a clever option, as it has shallow waves off the shingle beach as well as all sorts of things to keep adults happy, like shopping in The Lanes and sightseeing at the Royal Pavilion. If you’re keen to ingest some culture, that’s pretty easy too. Book tickets for alfresco opera performances at stately Glyndebourne between May and late August, visit Virginia Woolf’s country home at National Trust-owned Monk’s House (both half an hour), or tour the impressive collection of decorative arts at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft (five minutes).
