The bell tents

General

  • Peaceful farm close to Hastings, three miles from Battle Abbey
  • Five beaches and two castles within five miles
  • Modern amenities including a refurbished toilet and shower block

Battle Abbey may be only three miles away, but a peaceful time is pretty much guaranteed down on this East Sussex farm a quick drive from Hastings.

Whatever you insist on doing while on hol, disagreements should be discouraged by the sheer amount of attractions and activities within a few minutes of Buckhurst Campsite: smuggling adventures, two castles, the 1066 Story and five Sussex beaches are all within 10 miles; the site is among the walks, wildlife and Sussex scenery of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and – most happily – a vineyard is within walking distance. Absolutely nothing to wine about here, then…

Amenities at Buckhurst Campsite are plentiful and include a refurbished toilet and shower block with hot water, a washing-up area, hand basins and drinking water.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

Reception is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Toilet/shower facilities are available for tent pitches only. Touring units must be self-contained.

Lots of open space with plenty of room. Arrived on the Saturday so was pretty full but we were well looked after and found a super pitch. Showers and toilets were always really clean.
You can have fires etc if you chose to do so. Great position for getting to Battle and Hastings. Plenty to do within driving distance. There is a hotel/pub at the end of the road but we did not visit as we were more than content soaking up the sun at the campsite. Great value. Friendly welcome.

    The fire under the stars......

    Disliked:

The campsite is huge, it was nice and packed with a relaxed atmosphere. We rented a bell tent which appeared to missing several items. Bean bags, firepit, bedding, free fire wood, wood burning stove and beds made up.....well according to their advert on pitchup all these items were included.
Donna in the office gave us some bedding and said it was on the Buckhurst site stating no bedding was supplied at the moment due to Coronavirus.....fair enough but all adverts should surely be updated ?......we was charged £5 per bag of firewood yet as i said the advert stated free firewood.....all rather confusing....
So for £75 per night it just was not worth the money.....the tent itself was ok, we had one chair for 3 of us......tent does accommodate 4 people.....but Donna gave us 2 more chairs after asking her.
The pictures on Pitchup look fantastic.....bell tents far away from each other looking like they are surrounded by woodland, well not quite as there is a road just the other side of the trees lol.....dont be fooled, there are four bell tents within a stones throw to each other all encased behind a fence which made us feel segregated.
As for the toilet/shower block well i never saw a paper towel over the two days, i saw the cleaner but no paper towels refilled. There are 3 showers with poor water pressure and 3 toilets, or maybe 2 showers? i cant remember.
We spent the friday night there with a bbq which we had to prepare the food on a manky rotten old wooden bench which was our table for eating, not very hygienic...then we lit a fire in the bottom of the bbq as we had no wood burner but it felt nice and cosy under the stars, then off to bed......it was awful, the blow up beds went down over the night, make sure you have a 'cigarette lighter' in your car so you can plug the pump in to blow them back up, oh and of course your car handy !
The next night there was no way i was slumming it on that bed so went home.....feeling completely ripped off! The pictures on Pitchup look fantastic, you even get cute fairy lights on the outside of the tent and 2 battery lanterns.....cute, if you bring your own batteries lol.....all in all abit of a shambles, certainly not worth the money and we will not be staying again.....was supposed to be a nice camping experience, all it caused was stress.Show less

From the manager...

Hello

Thank you for the review. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay at Buckhurst.

In the 3 years hiring out our bell tents we have only had excellent reviews about them. So it's a shame the bell tents wasnt up to your standards.

Fairy lights outside the bell tents and lanterns are always checked before guests arrive you just needed to press the on/off button.

Clearly stated on pitch up in IMPORTANT INFORMATION RELATED TO CORONAVIRUS it clearly states no bedding will be provided in rented accommodations this year. And previous guests have always brought their own bedding. A miss understanding on pitch up I believe.

Again I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay.

Many thanks

Buckhurst :)

From Brighton to Buckhurst Campsite, our journey there, back; and our entire weekend away couldn't have been any better, especially as the weather was so swelteringly hot! Facilities were clean and maintained well, there is a bit of a walk, short cycle, or car ride - all three we saw - down the hill to the main reception and toilets; this, however, obviously depends on where you pitch: we camped up by the entrance. We were a group of friends who didn't face any noise complaints, neither from staff or neighbours. The one member of staff we did have contact with (who checked our tickets) was friendly and informative.

*You'll be pleased to know: it's a short 15 min drive to McDonald's or Sainsbury's!

    Disliked:

I didn't dislike this, more a fault of the weather, but it may be useful to know that there is not much shade at Buckhurst. Around the sides of the camping ground, shade is first-come-first-served.

    Plenty of space
    Friendly guests on other pitches
Enjoyed the dogs (owned by other guests)

    Disliked:

Group of Youths who were noisy into the wee small hours and as such should have been jumped on by the staff. Although this did not disrupt us it would have if they had been in our field.
    Considerations that would have been nice to haves;
    * A shelter over the wash up area
    * Hot water in the wash up area
    and
    * A fridge freezer to keep perishables in / re-freeze ice blocks particularly as we had such great weather
Consistent hum of traffic from a main road

Local attractions

Battlefield boffins have the history and highlights of 1066 and all that a couple of minutes’ drive away at Battle Abbey and Battlefield, site of the famous showdown between King Harold and William the Conqueror (there’s a clue there as to who won).

The heady fare here – including visitor centre with CGI re-enactment, events and the abbey itself – should entice all ages; if this fires up the kids’ historical imaginations, another 1066 experience is at nearby Hastings Castle (both recommended).

Reach Hastings Castle via one of the two cliff railways, West Hill and East Hill Lifts, and do remember to look down; East Hill Lifts is the steepest funicular railway in the country and has smashing views over Hastings Country Park where it ends up.

Kids castled out? Hastings has heaps of other family things to do: start off at the seafront’s Hastings Miniature Railway, which runs to old fishing village Rock-a-Nore where you can pick up some local seafood, dive into the exhibits of the Fishermen’s Village or take a boat out to land your own scaly specimens.

The famous Hastings Fishmarket, where most of the Hastings’s daily catch is sold after being landed at The Stade, is on Rock-a-nore Road, the town’s shingle beach which has been a maritime centre for over a millennia and which now has the biggest beachside fishing fleet in Europe. Check out the area’s tales at the Shipwreck Museum and at the Lifeboat Station and Visitors’ Centre, or take a boat trip out to find your own deep sea wreck.

If your history interests – or more likely, the kids’ – tend towards the more nefarious, a big local treasure is St Clements Caves back on West Hill, which tells the tales of the area’s smuggling exploits via Hairy Jack and the team.

At White Rock Gardens in the town, Clambers Play Centre has huge indoor and outdoor play areas for all ages and picnic tables, café and free parking; while retail therapy can be had at the Priory Meadow Shopping Centre near Hastings’s seafront.

Walks through 1066 Country and the High Wealds AONB are also easily accessible, as are Sussex beaches; a golf course at Battle and a golf school in Rother and stacks of other Sussex highlights such as sweet English vineyards, theme parks, watersports and cycling the Sussex Downs.

Must see

  • 1066 Battle Abbey and Battlefield (4.3 kilometres)
  • Hastings Castle and 1066 Story (6.7 kilometres)
  • A Smugglers Adventure at St Clements Caves (6.7 kilometres)
