  • Off-grid pitches set in 20 acres of East Sussex woodland and meadows
  • Hastings, Battle Abbey and Pett Level Beach all 15 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-friendly site with firepits, hammocks and rope swings provided
Woods and meadows sounds like a pretty good combination, right? And in fact it gets even better when you throw in the coast too, as you can do at Pop-Up Woods and Meadows Campsite. Spread over 20 acres of East Sussex countryside in the High Weald National Landscape, this spacious site is just 15 minutes’ drive from the shingle beach and café at Pett Level. As the name suggests, the dog-friendly pitches spread over three separate meadows with woodland attached, and guests are welcome to choose whichever they prefer for their stay. There are plenty of hidden corners to choose from, catering for groups, families and individuals looking for a nature-filled off-grid place to stay. This is a site that’s been set up to make the most of the rural peace and quiet – it’s got a no-music policy and it’s kept car-free too. You’ll walk along trackways to find pitches cut into the meadow grass or hidden away in the woods – if you’ve got too much kit to carry, grab a wheelbarrow; otherwise a bell-hop service can give you a hand for a small fee. The general vibe here is one of wild camping, but you’ll be able to use the firepits provided along with washing-up buckets, compost toilets and showers. Hammocks, rope swings, cargo nets and a geocache animal trail all make life in the woods and meadows even more enticing.

What customers say

A top spot for its chilled vibe, friendly hosts & great woodland/meadow sites. Spacious pitches are a plus. Well-placed for Hastings & coast. Friday night pizzas a hit. Basic but clean loos/showers. Some found it noisy or parking/pitch distance pricey.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely campsite: friendly owners - very warm, welcoming and helpful. Pizzas on Friday night were great - delicious and reasonably priced. Really nice surroundings - nice to have the option of camping in the meadow or the woods (both lovely).

Disliked Not really a dislike as such but just a heads up that cars can't be parked at pitches, and some of the pitches are a fair distance when travelling with a lot of camping stuff. There are very large wheelbarrows though and a bell hop service (for an extra fee). Wasn't too much of a problem for us, and was nice to be in green space without cars...but may be an issue for those not as up for walking their gear to their pitches.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Spacious pitches, friendly warden and relaxed atmosphere. Great location, moments from Hastings and the beach.

Disliked Some of the children in large family groups were very loud, this detracted from our stay a little.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Friendly people - that's about it!

Disliked The toilets are compost loos (think festival toilet that's actually a hole in the ground) - yikes!
The trek from the car to the pitches is up hill. That doesn't sound a big deal but when you're carrying a weekends worth of camping gear, that's hard work.
There are no washing facilities. This resulted in me getting food poisoning from being unable to wash my hands after prepping food.
There are very few flat areas so pitching up means you're on some kind of slope.
The cost of WAY over priced for what it is.

From the manager: Lee we are pretty shocked by your review. Compost toilets are not for everyone, which is why you have options for different toilets in your field. Every toilet has hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray, and is next to a water point that also provides soap. Your food poisoning will not be a result of a lack of facilities. You and the other dads had an amazing pitches altogether, and when i came around cleaning the toilets , and asked if you were all ok you didn't speak up about the facilities?.
You had to walk 200 meters from the car park to your pitch we provide wheelbarrows and a Bell hop service that helps you with heavy items for a fee. Your tents were not on a slope you had lots of space and privacy, but, from what we've read, we are not the campsite for you.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Space was lovely and close to local town.

Disliked I thought the pitch was slightly more expensive than others we had been to. We usually pay around £35pn. This site was £55pn.

We found one of the owners rude. We stayed for 2 nights during the week and the website said reception closes at 8pm. We were arriving after work and received a phone call to check we were still arriving. The lady was very kind and explained that if it was a quieter night they like to head off at 6pm. She explained it wasn't a problem to arrive at site after this time.

The second night, my husband walked up to reception at 7.30pm to ask for some logs. The gentleman was rude and made a comment that people cannot read signs. There were no signs around camp to state they shut at 6pm. Only 8pm.

We just felt there were nicer ways to speak to customers.

Local attractions

And what about days at the beach? Well, the site is about 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Hastings; with its pier, skatepark, mini-golf course and watersports rental hubs, it’s a great choice for family days out. Pett Level Beach (also 15 minutes) is more the spot for long walks marvelling at the natural caves and pillars carved into the cliffs, while Camber Sands (35 minutes) is a vast sandy expanse with ice cream parlours and takeaways. If history is your thing, then you chose your campsite well, for Battle Abbey and the Battle of Hastings site are only 15 minutes’ drive away. Impressive moated Bodiam Castle (20 minutes) is owned by the National Trust and open for meanders around its courtyard and turreted towers. Bateman’s (half an hour) is another impressive NT property, a handsome Jacobean mansion once owned by author Rudyard Kipling. Keen to see more of East Sussex? Climb aboard the Kent & East Sussex Railway at Tenterden (half an hour) for a chug through the lush Rother Valley, or for something a bit different, hire a paddleboard and ease your way down the River Rother (also half an hour).
