  • Back-to-basics site in the Forest of Bowland National Landscape
  • Bowland Wild Boar Park five minutes’ drive; Longridge 20 minutes
  • Resident hens; excellent stargazing; a five-minute drive from a pub
Sometimes you just want to switch off and return to a simpler lifestyle, with no mobile phones, no apps and no doom scrolling. If you’re ready for an off-grid break (think no electricity and few mod cons…), Little Bowland Farm, in the Forest of Bowland National Landscape, might be the place for you. This is no-frills camping… with the odd frill, such as a gas-fired shower in a pretty wooden cubicle in the middle of a field, well-kept portaloos and a washing-up area, plus drinking water. You also get pretty epic views of the Lancashire countryside, with Longridge Fell looming in the distance; and the occasional visit from the resident hens – or from the local wildlife, which might include deer, hares and woodland birds. With the farm being so remote, there is very little light pollution, and you’ll have front-row seats for spectacular star-studded dark skies on clear nights. And if it gets chilly, you can sit around a campfire. Barbecues are also allowed, and you can source all you need from the market towns of Longridge (20 minutes’ drive) and Clitheroe (25 minutes), both of which also have plenty of dining options. Mind you, you don’t have to go that far to find good pub grub: the nearest watering hole is in Chipping village (five minutes), and there’s another 10 minutes’ drive away, on the banks of the River Hodder, close to the Whitewell Stepping Stones.

Local attractions

Bowland Wild Boar Park (five minutes’ drive) is home to more than boars, with donkeys, meerkats, pygmy goats and many more residents. The park also runs (seasonal) chick-holding and animal-feeding sessions, plus popular tractor and barrel rides through the woodland of the Trough of Bowland. Ride a vintage steam train or a railbus at the Ribble Steam Railway & Museum in Preston (45 minutes), and travel three miles to the docks and along the River Ribble. There is a splendid (and peaceful) Japanese Garden at Avenham and Miller Park, or head out of town to the Brockholes, a wetland area with bird hides and adventure playgrounds. In Blackpool (an hour), check out the Blackpool Tower, the iconic red metal structure dominating the seafront, and maybe pop into the equally iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom, with its extravagantly gilded decor and sprung dance floor (if you fancy a twirl). The town also has three piers, seven miles of sandy beaches and the Pleasure Beach amusement park.
