General

  • Secluded and peaceful base from which to explore the western lakes
  • Hot showers and hairdryers available on site
  • Dogs welcome and barbecues allowed

Off to the western lakes but want to wander lonely as a cloud instead of being there jam-packed in crowds? Have a look at Whinfell Farm Camp Site: it's secluded, medium sized and in a winning position for scouting around Cockermouth, Buttermere and the highlights of the western Lake District.

Such scenic surrounds require no complex facilities and entertainments, so amenities have been kept simple but with thoughtful extra touches including hot showers and hairdryers. The washing-up room has been kitted out with a freezer and laundry facilities to ensure it's easy to keep the tribe fed and cleaned up… and well-behaved dogs are welcome to join the jaunt to the Lakes as long as they're kept on leads while on site.

Whinfell also allows barbecues (not campfires, firepits or anything of that ilk, please): just remember to keep them off the ground to prevent damage to the turf. If you want to eat out, it's a leisurely 10-minute trot to the 17th-century Wheatsheaf Inn for top-notch meals as well as a tempting range of local ales; best to book before you set out, as such a setup is unsurprisingly rather popular.

A decent night's sleep being a vital ingredient of a happy stay for many folk, the owners request that all guests pipe down after 10.30pm to ensure peaceful slumbers all round.

We pre booked this campsite but when we turned up there was heaps of uncleared rubbish, overflowing bins including some hot coals that someone had just poured on top of them. The site was extremely muddy and uninviting. It was unclear where our pitch was and the owner wasn’t even there. We reversed the motor home out and went and found somewhere else.

    Nothing only the location

    Disliked:

Everything, bins overflowing and the cesspit behind the bins had an overbearing smell of faeces which should had been emptied more regular. Kept smelling our tent out Muddy grass pitch. The shower room and toilet was disgusting, filthy all day full of cobwebs and dirt everywhere. No COVID-19 procedures in place. Wash room to wash your pots was really dirty you were better off washing them in the nearby stream. Tried to book somewhere else but there was nothing available. Owner clearly has no interest in the site, not bothered about returning customers, just interested in lining his pockets. We wouldn’t return to this site if someone paid me too and we are regular campers. Blot on a landscape in a beautiful area.

The location is excellent, 4 miles from Cockermouth which is a lovely town. There is a bar approximately half a mile down the road which does good food.

    Disliked:

Absolutely no effort made to provide any form of social distancing, the whole site was rammed with tents etc...
The ground was sodden and we helped 3 different groups to push their vehicles out of the mud and also had to be helped ourselves at one point.
The facilities leave a lot to be desired, there are only 2 showers each for male and female, this is not enough when the owner is allowing so many people to pitch up. The toilet block is not clean (lots of cobwebs and insects), only toilet roll made available to dry your hands after washing them.
2 large rubbish bins which were overflowing when we arrived and were even worse when we left.

Noisy even though the site says no noise after 10.30. Loud music beyond midnight

    Location in The Lakes

    Disliked:

Very basic facilities in a ramshackle building. After a little rain everywhere both inside and out was muddy as no gravel/ path areas. Site on a slope and water logged. The entrance was was churned up with mud after 2 days rain so everyone had to be towed off. Luckily another camper had a suitable vehicle and kindly helped as we'd probably still be there now.

Local attractions

Buttermere and Loweswater are the nearest lakes to Whinfell Farm Camp Site, each with accompanying villages and circular lakeside walks. Loweswater is managed by the National Trust and has rowing boats available for hire.

On land, the western lakes area is as full of things to do as its more central counterparts, with activities such as golfing, cycling, shoreline horse rides and hiking around the Roman heritage, valleys and peaks of Eskdale, Wasdale and the coastal village of Ravenglass.

Also take time for an afternoon or day among the mountain bike trails and forest walks of Whinlatter, named by the Forestry Commission as England's only true mountain forest. It's one of the Super 6 mountain bike trails and has the longest purpose-built MTB track in the whole Lake District; find out more in the Whinlatter Forestry Centre.

Keswick's Honister Slate Mine is the last working slate mine in England and is open to visitors who come for one of the several tours and to climb to the top of the mountain using the original miners' path.

And if it's sea you want to see, the Cumbrian coastline at Allonby is about 12 miles away.
