Sun and croquet at Green Acres

General

  • Peaceful adults-only park a 15-minute drive from Carlisle
  • Half an hour's drive from Hadrian’s Wall and Lake District paths
  • Comfy communal cabin with magazines, books and DVDs

Fancy a bit of peace and quiet with not a young ‘un in sight? Book a holiday at Green Acres Caravan Park in Cumbria, an adult's-only haven that lives up to its nature-inspired name.

This friendly spot a six-mile jaunt from the history-packed city of Carlisle has been in the Brown family for three generations, making the friendly service as top-notch as the surrounding scenery. You can quiz staff on their best travel tips... or simply find a grassy patch with a view and flick through the tourist pamphlets supplied on site.

For breaks from traipsing around the cracking countryside, the communal cabin’s full of comfy seats for snuggling in with one of the mags or books provided. Bucketing down outside? Hole up with entertainment courtesy of the DVD selection… along with snacks from the grocer’s in Houghton village a five-minute drive away. For enough food to feed a small army, there's also a well-stocked supermarket less than 10 minutes from the park.

Got caught up in that aforementioned shower? Laundry facilities are on hand to freshen up clothes. And if your car or caravan’s been given a mud bath too, the site has a token-operated vehicle-washing area for spraying those down.

What a lovely spacious and tidy site surrounding a nice green grassy area. Flat pitches so no need for levellers for the motorhome. We stayed here during the virus so none of the facilities were open but we were self contained anyway.
Very nice dog walk with plenty of poo bins.
We stopped here on our way to Scotland but will be back fro a longer stay.
I had my cycle with me and there are some nice quiet lanes for a ride.

We have stayed at this site before and very much like the convenience from the M6 motorway. The facilities were closed on this occasion due to Covid restrictions but the site is well maintained and well organised on arrival. A selection of fully serviced and electric pitches are available and have stayed on both with a motor home and caravan and would recommend this site if travelling to the Lake District or Scotland area. Would return again.

Very well kept park, constantly keeping the park in lovely condition, great communication, very nice people, taps being sanitised all the time, made to feel welcome. Easy access from M6 hence there is a lot of one-nighters coming and going. Would use again once the new toilet block is open. The dog walk is great going down into some woods with nature in mind

    Disliked:

Nothing really to dislike just annoying things like poor phone reception and wifi on pitches. (Wifi available in cabin).
Small shingle that sticks in the tread of your shoes and comes into the caravan with you.
2lb club hammer needed for rock pegs

Local attractions

History buffs rejoice: Carlisle and its castle – the storied spot where Mary Queen of Scots was locked up for a time – is under a 20-minute drive from Green Acres. And while you're in this city famed for its cathedral and racecourse, the shops are worth a perusal as well...

Hadrian’s Wall on your bucket list? Perfect – it’s a mere half an hour in the car to this top Roman attraction (the most visited of such in all of Britain, in fact). Or if you fancy stretching your legs, there’s always the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path and the fell walks of the Lake District, with the latter starting a 30-minute drive to the south.

Tad more arduous than you were after? Shorter walks can be had right from the site: a dog-walking area begins at the top end, leading to woodlands and linking up with a public footpath. Or you could drive to Lanercost Priory 20 minutes away to meander around the medieval cloisters and grounds.

Must see

  • Carlisle Castle (5.8 kilometres)
  • World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop Centre (11.9 kilometres)
  • Birdoswald Roman Fort (20.1 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Allen Banks and Staward Gorge (37.0 kilometres)
  • Hadrian's Wall and Housesteads Fort (38.3 kilometres)
