The pub

General

  • Spectacular rural views from your pitch
  • Relax in peace at an adults-only site
  • Excellent location for walkers just off the Pennine Way

If you know your Brontë, you'll be fairly sure of what to find around Wuthering Heights Inn a mile and a half from Haworth in West Yorkshire: remoteness, wild moors, wild hikes and scenery to write home about. (And if you don't know your Brontë, tsk; but this is the best setting in the world to finally read Wuthering Heights.)

This is remote camping with a wild feel – but with a pub just steps away and easily accessible to Yorkshire market towns like Skipton, Saltaire and Hebden Bridge as well as the cities of Leeds and Bradford. It's just off both the Pennine and Millennium Ways: have a wild hike while reciting the rather impassioned lines of Heathcliff.

The tiny site at Wuthering Heights is hidden from view behind the inn and accessed down a flight of 30 steps; there's no vehicle access so while it's splendidly secluded and peaceful, it isn't suitable for those with mobility issues. Toilets and a shower are available all day, and food is served in the pub every lunchtime and on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

The site also has a utility room with fridge, washing-up facilities, a radiator with drying rack, a kettle and sockets for phone charging, hairdryers etc. For security reasons this is kept locked, but keys are available for a £10 deposit, refundable on return of the key.

Wuthering Heights is a peaceful place, so the team asks guests to respect fellow guests and local residents by keeping noise to a minimum.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

The camping field is behind the pub and is accessed by foot down a flight of thirty steps. The toilet, shower and washing-up area are at the rear or the pub up the steps.

We arrived tea time Friday night it was a lovely warm day so decided to sit in beer garden and have a couple of drinks. Beautiful place to sit, the view is breath taking.
We were booked in to stay in Emily a shepherds hut. The view from the hut is wonderful, sat out on the veranda for hours watched the lovely sunset. Bed has very good quality linen, pretty curtains frame the great view from the window. All you need cutlery, dishes cups and glasses. Flask provided to bring down hot water for your morning tea or coffee also provided, table and chairs and a neat log burner for chilly evenings. The toilets shower and kitchen unit are shared. We did charge our phones as the unit is locked so safe. Ladies a great bonus hair dryer and straighteners provided. The meals in the pub are very good can recommend staff are helpful and polite All Covid precautions are taken so feel secure. Definitely will return in the future. The only down side I should have booked a longer stay!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Nice quiet small site situated to the rear of the pub. We stopped in the Charlotte shepherd's hut. It was clean and comfortable and well laid out. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was lovely. Ideal to explore the surrounding beautiful area, or just sit and relax. We will be back.

The amount of effort that had been made and continued to be made to ensure health safety on site and whilst in pub. One way system established in pub, ensuring no contact. Distanced serving, excellent food served in the pub, good well portioned and amicable price. Staff in pub absolutely spot on and could not do enough. Facilities for those staying overnight were frequently cleaned. Shower room was heated and plenty of hot water and a nice place to shower. Utility room with drying rack, fridge, pot washing facilities and mobile charging point.
Camping pitch kept well, sufficient dust bins and even ashtrays for smokers. Level pitch, with amazing views of open countryside. Ample parking as well

The Shepherd's Hut - Emily - is gorgeous! Wonderful view, and perfectly equipped for an outdoorsy weekend with a little extra luxury. We lit the little log burner a couple of times on chilly evenings and were really impressed at how quickly it heats up the whole hut.
The shared facilities (loos, shower and kitchen / utility area) are really well thought out and a good standard compared to typical camping facilities. It's quite reassuring that the utility room is locked with campers having a key to access - while we didn't make the most of this, clearly others were happy to leave their devices safely locked away whilst on charge.
We ate at the pub three times, and can't fault a single item. All staff we spoke to we're friendly and helpful.
Can't wait to plan our next visit!

Directions

Stanbury is on the B6142: to approach from the M1 avoiding Bradford take Junction 26 and join the A58 to Hipperholme, at the main crossroad near the church, turn right joining the A629 and follow the signs straight on towards Haworth. At the mini roundabout take the first exit and follow the road through Haworth and out into the countryside. Stanbury is just over a mile from Haworth and the Wuthering Heights is on your right just after entering the village. This is not the shortest route, but is probably the simplest.

To approach from the M65, stay on the motorway until it finishes at Colne. At the roundabout take the first exit joining the A6088, continue straight on the A6088 over a number of roundabouts until reaching Laneshawbridge where you take a right at the Emmott Arms; this winding road over the moors will bring you straight into Stanbury. You will find the Wuthering Heights on your left.

By bus, take line 664 from Keighley.

Local attractions

Scenery-filled hikes on the surrounding moors are minutes away from Wuthering Heights Inn, and within 45 minutes you can be at Top Withens which inspired the Brontë book. (Again, wild hikes while reciting the rather impassioned lines of Heathcliff are recommended.)

Both the Pennine Way and the Millennium Way are close by, and cyclists can follow part of the Tour de France Yorkshire route through Knaresborough, Silsden, Keighley, Haworth, Hebden Bridge and Elland.

Five minutes by car or 20 minutes by foot will take Brontë buffs to their former home at Haworth, now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, and to join the Keighley and Worth Valley steam train (yes, this is the one in The Railway Children) or wander up the town's cobbled main street. Hebden Bridge and its markets are also a short drive away.

At the nearby World Heritage Site of Saltaire, arty sorts should like the Hockney exhibition in Salts Mill and heritage buffs the preserved mill workers' town, once a dry spot (shudder) but now with bars, bistros and shops aplenty.

About 15 miles away, Skipton has access to the Yorkshire Dales and its villages, caves, spectacular scenery and miles more walks: be sure to take your copy of Wuthering Heights here too.

Must see

  • Bronte Parsonage Museum (1.9 kilometres)
