  • Peaceful hilltop campsite with spectacular views of the Tyne Valley
  • A 20-minute drive to Derwent Reservoir; Newcastle-upon-Tyne 30 minutes
  • Dark sky site for stargazing; gastropub five minutes' walk away
Sitting on the edge of the sleepy village of Hedley on the Hill, Valley View Camping has a spectacular setting overlooking the lovely Tyne Valley, with a west-facing position that's splendid for watching the sunset. The grass pitches are on a level field with masses of space for games and activities, so kids can let off steam safely (perhaps flying one of the kites available to borrow on site) – and it's dog-friendly too, so your pooch can join you on your break. This is a great spot for walkers, with footpaths starting right from the field, where you might get to see buzzards and rare red kites riding the thermals overhead. Cyclists, you can test yourselves on the demanding National Hill-Climb Championships course that ran up into the village from Stocksfield in 2017. What’s provided? A portable toilet, a mains water tap (not for drinking) and thoughtful extras like complimentary drinking water, tea, coffee and raw (unpasteurised) milk fresh from the dairy herd in the cattle trailer, along with maps of local walks and kites, a football net and a sandpit for the kids. All pitches have a firepit, and logs are available to buy on site. And how about some alfresco eats? The folk at Valley View have teamed up with their local butcher to give guests the option to pre-order campers’ breakfast and/or barbecue packs, all delivered right to your pitch. (Just let them know if you'd like one at least 48 hours before your stay so they can place your order.) Not up for cooking? An award-winning gastropub is less than a five-minute walk away in the village, with a fire kitchen and takeaway service. Just down the hill in Stocksfield there are regular weekend food trucks at the cricket club and local pub. Stocksfield, Mickley and Prudhoe (10 minutes’ drive) have handy local stores where you can pick up goodies to enjoy around the firepit.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: First wild camping experience. Nice site with basic set up, porta loo’s and free Tea&coffee from onsite trailer. Views from the site are amazing and the peace and tranquility was just what we were looking for. The owners of the site were extremely helpful and friendly, driving around the site ensuring everything was ok and asking if we wanted to buy logs for provided fire pit, which we did and enhanced our stay. Lovely little village pub serving stone fired pizza’s which were very nice and reasonably priced. Would recommend this site if you’re looking for a quiet relaxing break. We will definitely be returning soon.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The hosts, the view, the pub, the facilities. The reason we have been back for the third year in a row. Advise getting there late morning if over a weekend to get the pitches with the best view. Amazing site and will be back again next year. Site owner advised of a meteor shower and it was worth it.

Local attractions

What with the Tyne Riverside Country Park (20 minutes’ drive) and Northumberland National Park (30 minutes’ drive) being so close, it’s time to get those walking shoes on for bracing hikes and gorgeous views. Chopwell Woodland Park (15 minutes) has plenty of easy walks along former railway lines that suit families with young kids. Cycling trails criss-cross Northumberland, with arduous options for long-distances bikers along the Coast to Coast Path, and waterside rides around Derwent Reservoir (20 minutes), which is also a great option for anglers looking for a spot of fly fishing. Lucky old golfers are spoilt for choice too, with several courses within a 15-minute drive of base camp. The historic towns of Corbridge (20 minutes) and Hexham (30 minutes) are packed with cosy tea shops and arty boutiques, and it’s only 30 minutes into Newcastle for big-hitting attractions like the Life Science Centre and Angel of the North sculpture.
