  • Camping field overlooking Bamburgh Castle and Northumbrian countryside
  • A 30-minute walk to Budle Bay beach; 25-minute drive to Alnwick Castle
  • Small, back-to-basics farm site near pubs, restaurants and shops
Spindlestone Farm is a peaceful place to stay in the gorgeous Northumbrian countryside, with views of Bamburgh Castle and just five minutes’ drive to Budle Bay beach. With only a very few pitches available on the farm’s camping field, guests get all the perks of camping in a spectacular location with none of the crowds. Bamburgh (five minutes) has a choice of pubs, a couple of posh restaurants, a deli and of course a famed castle and a long, long beach for splashing about on, so there is plenty for all the family to do. Seahouses is a 15-minute drive away for a handy small supermarket and plenty of fish and chip shops as well as boat cruises out to the Farne Islands. The site is dog friendly, but as there is livestock nearby, your pets must be kept under close control. Situated next to a very quiet country road, access to the site is easy, and it’s 10 minutes’ drive from the A1, making it an ideal stopover for anyone travelling to and from Scotland. Facilities are basic and include a tap. There are no showers but there is a long-drop loo.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nice views

Disliked: Very poor facility’s and massively over priced for what it was £50 was not value for money. Location was hard to find and no answer when ringing the number provided for information

From the manager: Dear Liam, Thank you for your time in leaving a review. I am sorry that the campsite was a disappointment to you. However I do believe that your review is somewhat unfair; the campsite is not £50 per night, it is £25 and therefore this comment is very misleading. I have never before had a comment that the site is hard to find. Instead , guests regularly comment on how clear the instructions are to reach the field. I get a high volume of phone calls and can only apologise that yours was missed. However I always respond to any voicemails and messages I receive yet you left none. Regarding your comment about having no walks, this really did make me laugh - bamburgh and the surrounding area is renowned for beautiful walks for miles and miles. With the beach only a 15 minute walk away, I don’t think you looked very hard. We always welcome guests to walk around the farm if they ask, yet you didn’t ask. So this is another very unfair comment.

Super! Just what I wanted. Quiet and near the beach!!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful setting, great view of the castle, lovely secluded area, had the site to ourselves for 2/3 nights, fire pits were good to have use of

Disliked: Bug bites - presumably made worse because there were sheep grazing in the field at the same time. I cleared litter left by earlier campers but later found more in the corner of the site

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The view

Disliked: None cut straw, 18th century toilet, lack of security, flying ants. Overpriced.

From the manager: Hello Robert, Thank you for your time to leave a review. While I appreciate you were not satisfied with your stay at the farm, several complaints listed here are out of my control. Regarding your 'straw' comment, I presume you mean the grass felt like straw? Unfortunately we have had an exceptionally dry summer so I cannot do much about this. Equally, with the flying ants, this is something we have not experienced on the farm before but they have been spotted much more frequently in the area this year - also due to the continuous hot weather. Regarding security, as clearly stated on the pitch-up listing, we are a farm with a pop-up, seasonal camping field, not a permanent campsite, meaning there is not much more we can do for security. I believe our site is far more secure than a busy campsite with hundreds of people roaming about. I advise all guests prior to arriving to bring a padlock for your tent/belongings if you are concerned about security, but because of our very quiet location, and small number of guests, this has never been raised as an issue for us before. Regarding your comment about the toilet, again the pitch-up listing clearly states the facilities are very basic and the only toilet is a long drop - if this makes it 18th century, we believe this adds to the charm of the site. For your next camping trip to the area, I'd recommend that you book into one of the busy nearby campsites with flushing toilets and 24 hour security, although I can't promise you will escape the flying ants there, and the views may not be as good.
