  • Peaceful, spacious bell tent overlooking a field of alpacas
  • A 15-minute drive from Malton and 35 minutes from York
  • Alpaca treks available on site daily; drive to pubs and restaurants
Put down roots in a peaceful bell tent for a little while… Butterwick Alpaca Retreat is a gorgeous spot with a peaceful tent that sleeps six people. Overlooking the site’s alpaca fields, but safely fenced off, there are views of the alpacas and alpaca treks available on site daily. The sounds of the countryside and the farm animals are your daily soundtrack. The quiet spot is well geared towards relaxing and quality time, that’s for sure – particularly if you take a stroll around the sensory farm area to meet the animals (not just alpacas but also lambs, goats and a flock of ducks and hens). As for your routine, you might want to use the microwave, kettle and toaster to prepare some breakfast, and then head out to Malton 15 minutes’ drive away. Known as the food capital of Yorkshire, it’ll give you a good introduction to the Yorkshire foodie scene… The same can be said of the local pubs and restaurants, which are within 10 minutes’ drive of the bell tent. Butterwick Alpaca Retreat is 50 minutes’ drive away from the coast for simple seaside amusements and 35 minutes from York if you’re looking for a historic day out too.

What customers say

Butterwick Alpaca Retreat offers a chilled, unique glamping trip. Hosts Anna & Chris are super friendly. Bell tents are kitted out & clean, and interacting with the alpacas is a huge plus. Great for kids (incl. SEN), with loads of space. A shower would be nice, but everyone loves it and recommends it!

Liked We stayed with our 15 month old who enjoyed spending time with the animals. There was lots of space for the little one to run around in safe enclosed spaces. The bell tent was lovely and had everything we needed. Anna and Chris were very helpful and friendly hosts. Would recommend.

Liked Anna has a pretty special place here at Butterwick Alpaca retreat. Our girls loved switching off for a bit and playing with the baby goats, guinea pigs and bunnies. The alpacas are so lovely and we were lucky to see the new arrivals. Bell tent set up is really good and it's just a lovely little site to get away from it all. Our third year now and we will be back next year!!!

Disliked Nothing. This place is a hidden gem.

Liked We liked absolutely everything about our stay, from Anna's phone call before we arrived to give us more detailed directions to alpaca selfies, bunny cuddles and everything in-between. It was a much needed time away from phones and tablets to get some fresh air and spend some quality time together. Anna was an amazing host that could not do enough for us. The bell tent was beautiful and spacious with everything you could possibly need for a night away. The kids (9 and 6) loved every second and can't wait to go back, which we will definitely be doing next year! Not only have we left with lovely memories and photos but eggs too. Can't recommend enough x

Liked Our party was a group of 6 with 2 Adults and 4 children aged 6-10.

We absolutely loved our stay at Butterwick. 🥰

You have your own private enclosed paddock with a beautiful belle tent, picnic bench, hammock and firepit/BBQ.

The belle tent was beautifully decorated with lots of lovely finishing touches and the host had literally thought of everything and provided all that you'd need from cutlery and crockery down to antibac wipes.

Anna was really friendly and welcoming and on hand if we needed anything at all. ❤️

Two of the children in our party have SEN and it was so lovely to be able to access such safe, welcoming environment where they felt comfortable and were able to interact with and hand feed the animals at their own pace and leisure.

The hammock was a firm favourite and is such a great addition to the paddock.

I would highly recommend Butterwick Alpaca Retreat and cannot wait to rebook next year 🦙✨ xx

Bell tent

Liked This is one of the best places we have camped! The tent is lovely and clean, has all the amenaties you will need for cooking. Anna was lovely in offering to help us with the fire pit when it was windy and even offered directions to local places.

The animals are lovely and you can spend time with them, you can also purchase feed for them. There is also lots of wildlife around to watch building nests and interacting with Anna's animals.

The location is great, it feels like your a million mile from reality but is about 15 minutes away from town.

Liked Wow! What an amazing get-away!

Anna and Chris go above and beyond to ensure the best possible stay. After meeting them on an Alpaca trek elsewhere, we already had high expectations for our visit. They well and truly exceeded those expectations. Their love of the site, farm and their job really shines through.

We had so much freedom to roam the farm, with unlimited access and time with the animals. The accommodation itself was absolutely spotless, and very welcoming. The site itself is so private, being only the one tent on site really added to that extra special feel.

We interacted with Alpacas, sheep, rabbits, hens and even a visit from their dogs who are very friendly. The sheep are so friendly running over to say hello and get some fuss. The children went around with Anna on her morning rounds with the animals, really enjoying getting involved.

Communication both before and after our visit was exceptional.

It really was an all around amazing experience that we will definitely be doing again.
