Orchard

General

  • Wild camping in a scenic Suffolk orchard and wildlife haven
  • A mile from the local village and 15 minutes drive from Stowmarket
  • Three acres of space and only a few pitches allowed

Pitch up among apple trees at the pretty Suffolk site of Stone House, set in an orchard a mile from the village of Mendlesham. Only a handful of pitches are on this three-acre wild camping site, so there’s plenty of room to spread out, laze under the fruit trees and spot the many species of wildlife living among them.

Stone House is 15 minutes drive from Stowmarket and within easy access to the A14, Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich. Norwich is 45 minutes drive away. If you’re arriving by car, parking isn’t allowed next to pitches but is available on the site driveway a few metres away.

The site has a toilet and cold running water. Barbecues are allowed: source supplies at the small shop in Mendlesham or at Stowmarket … or opt for fish and chips in the village or a stroll across the fields to the local and much recommended vegetarian restaurant.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

This is a real gem of a venue. Lovely hosts and great secluded spot with only a few pitches to make it feel special and your own amongst the elderly apple trees.

Running drinking water and a couple of loos give it some home comfort

The bell tent is fab. Plenty of space and height and well positioned to see the sunset

    Will be back

Easy to find and a great place for our boys (10 and 8) to run around. Great for kids to explore, make dens and climb trees on a secure site. Hamish was great - very friendly and helpful and taught our boys how to build a fire on our first evening. Our pitch had a shelter attached which was a really useful place to put our provisions etc. Because there are only a few pitches, you have lots of private space to relax. All in all, an extremely family-friendly place and we had a wonderful camping experience. A tourist centre with adventure golf, footgolf, pottery and an owl sanctuary was only five miles away and the kids really enjoyed the day there.
We only booked for three nights as there are only 'portaloos' and a drinking water tap on site and this was perfect for our family experience of 'wild camping'.

    Disliked:

There is a busy road near to the site which has constant traffic which can be heard from early in the morning.
The public footpaths around the campsites are poorly marked and are very overgrown. This meant, that for us, this was not a 'walking/discovery' holiday with the kids.

Felt quite wild, whilst still having a toilet and running water. As far away from a campervan site as you can get, which was one of our aims.

Really enjoyed sitting out in the orchard with a fire going. Our two year old loved running around in the undergrowth.

Owner was really friendly and sorted us out with everything we needed.

    Disliked:

A bit of a lack of decent shops nearby and many local attractions were closed due to some virus. Obviously not campsite's fault.

The wildness and beauty of the place. I also really liked the fact that I felt like my children were completely safe there. I’m a single parent with 3 children aged 3, 7 and 10 and I felt extremely comfortable with them exploring, playing on the swings etc without me being right there. It was a small site so I could always hear them. Although small it was great, we had our own space and was well away from other campers so it didn’t feel like we were on top of each other.
The hosts were great and very helpful. Really enjoyed the stay and will definitely visit again.
It is wild camping, with water and toilet facilities. So long as you are aware of what this entails then you will love it!

It was lovely environment as we weren’t located right next to other tents. There is plenty of space in between each other and tall trees around So felt very private close to wild camp! There were a couple of swings hang from a tree in front of our pitch so it kept entertaining our little ones. Also the orchard kept them busy as there were some apples on the ground they liked collecting.

Host was lovely they were supportive and gave some tips for surrounding areas. Would like to go back again!

There were beautiful sunsets over the fields and some wildlife to spot! The owners are incredibly friendly and made sure we were comfortable and had plenty of tips to enjoy the areas. We will definitely be back regularly!

Beautiful location for camping and very friendly and welcoming hosts, Hamish & Jess. We had a great pitch beneath a tree in their orchard which we were also able to hang our hammock from. Being able to have a fire in the fire pit was a nice surprise. Toilet is a portaloo but was very clean and never any queues because of the small number of campers on the small site.
