General

  • Family-friendly farm, 20 minutes from Norwich and half hour from coast
  • Well-placed for watersports and boat trips on the Norfolk Broads
  • Dogs welcome; plenty of walking and cycling paths directly from site

Can’t decide between a bit of farm life, bright city lights and refreshing coastal explores? Ditch the dithering and pack the whole lot in to one stay at Two Jays Farm: this small, family-friendly farm is in Horstead, a 20-minute drive from Norwich and half an hour from Norfolk’s beaches.

You’ll be in good company here – in the adjacent fields your neighbours will be the farm's resident horses, goats and chickens, and you're welcome to bring along a four-legged pal of your own if you've got a dog that fancies the trip.

Canine companion or no, this is a fine spot for getting out for a walk. Set off on foot or cycle along woodland paths and riverbanks to take in sights like the Bure Valley Railway, Horstead Mill on the River Bure (where you can jump into the water for a wild swim if it's getting a tad warm) and pretty market towns along the way.

Your reward at the end of a lengthy walk – perhaps a good feed at one of the nearby foodie pubs? The nearest is less than 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and there are a few more to choose from – along with some takeaways and a supermarket – in nearby Coltishall village, which is a 20-minute walk away (or a few minutes’ drive).

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Nice to see the animals, lots of space for the kids to run around safely, and mostly quiet with just a small number of families there, until the last night when several large groups with 2 or more enormous tents showed up for a bit of a party.

Good location for visiting Norwich and Great Yarmouth.

There was a nice looking solar shower in the field but as the weather was cold and wet we didn't try it.

    Disliked:

Toilets were portaloos although apparently she's going to build something more permanent for next year. The electric shower/washing up facilities are in a portacabin on the other side of the farm site, and were not kept clean enough, especially in context of covid.

Owner was very nice and friendly when we called her but could have been more proactive in greeting guests, providing information and checking things were clean rather than waiting for someone to tell her they weren't.

The site is next to a main road, which wasn't a problem for us (son liked spotting tractors etc over breakfast) but didn't provide a very tranquil atmosphere.

The incredibly friendly animals were amazing , and you could walk around and see at any point. Open air or indoor shower. Location was great not far from a play area and decent pubs or local shop. Nice fire pit.
The only thing I would say as they have the space is to have an area for louder/larger parties and separate field for ones with younger children or the quieter couples/families. But overall a great little place . The lady who owns the farm was amazing , very friendly and accommodating.
The kids loved waking up next to a horse and spent the morning with the most adorable Friendly goat.

We camped in a group of 8 celebrating multiple birthdays, we were welcomed and then left to our own devices which is just what we wanted! Plenty of space between us and the other campers and it was lovely to be able to walk around and see the animals. A very basic campsite but we all had a great weekend, thank you!

    Disliked:

The indoor shower was quite grimy and wouldn’t turn on for one of our friends - it could also do with some sign post directions from the camp site as we all walked the wrong way round and were politely asked to go the other way by someone in the stables. The portaloos had gotten pretty grim by the end of the weekend and they could do with a slightly brighter light in them but the whole experience was fine for what we were after!

The area is brilliant lots of lovely walks by the river and close to horstead Town. The camp fire was fab.

    Disliked:

when booking, the features on pitch up said showers and toilets, very dissappointed as turned out there were 2 portaloos which were disgusting. and the shower was just behind a fence no use in the weather we had this weekend. If these had been noted on site at time of booking I definitely wouldn't have booked. No lights at all within the campsite. I also never saw any member of staff while there. Definitely wasn't 6 pitches there was at least 9 tents on Sunday night. Not impressed for the price.

Our 18 month loved romping about within the safe confines of the campsite and meeting all the alpacas and horses. The owner was very friendly and she brought her gorgeous pet goat Charlie over to our tent to introduce themselves. The facilities were basic but clean and suited us just fine. There was a communal firepit which would be amazing in non-Covid times. Close to a river so we could take our canoe out for a day trip easily.

    Disliked:

No bin in the shower room. The water in the campsite kept on turning off but I think I just hadn't worked out how to use the tap properly. I'm guessing that it didn't come on because someone had switched the water supply to the shower tap instead. Maybe a sign to explain would be helpful?

Local attractions

Being right on the Norfolk Broads, Two Jays is well-placed for a range of water activities – you can go fishing, sailing, or rent kayaks and canoes for adventures on the water… or leave the navigating up to someone else and opt for a boat trip instead.

For activities on dry land, visit BeWILDerwood (10-minute drive), a forest park full of trails, treehouses, bridges, zipwires and slides. There’s more action at leisure and shopping complex Wroxham Barns (10 minutes), where there’s a kids' farm and funfair alongside boutiques, craft studios and eateries.

If you’re heading to the coast, combine beach days with some animal spotting; there’s a zoo in Cromer (half an hour) and a SEA LIFE Centre at Great Yarmouth (40 minutes).

There’s a bunch of parks nearby if you’re looking for big open spaces for pleasant ambles, picnics, and kids’ play areas. Try Waterloo Park (15 minutes), Catton Park (15 minutes), Earlham Park (half an hour) or Eaton Park (half an hour).

For a bit of culture, visit the impressive Blickling Estate (15 minutes) and Felbrigg Hall, Gardens and Estate (25 minutes). Or combine a trip to Norwich (20 minutes) with a look at the cathedral and Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery.
