Halfway house inn

  • Adults-only campsite at a Shropshire inn on the edge of Bridgnorth
  • Severn Valley Railway five minutes’ drive; Ironbridge Gorge 25 minutes
  • Hardstanding pitches with electricity; pub food and real ale on site
When it’s time to sneak off for an adults-only Shropshire break, make a dash for the family-owned tourer pitches behind 16th-century Halfway House Inn on the outskirts of Bridgnorth, Shropshire. Suitable for most sizes of motorhome, this small caravan park has neatly landscaped pitches on hardstanding, all with electrical hook-ups and their own direct water supply (but none with a connection for toilet waste). With 14 courses under an hour’s drive and numerous fishing spots on the River Severn, Halfway House Inn makes a great base for keen golfers and anglers – and if you’re a real ale lover, all you need to do is nip into the pub for a pint of your favourite brew (the bar is open daily). If you’re intent on self-catering, you can rustle up barbecue suppers on site; although alternatively the pub serves tasty British classics from Thursday to Monday. Facilities-wise, the small on-site toilet block has separate facilities for men and women – all with bags of hot water in the showers – and the loos in the pub are open 24/7 during the main holiday months. There’s also a dedicated washing-up area so you can keep on top of the chores.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the pub was beautiful. Pitches were a good size and all services which was great. The toilets were immaculate and all amenities were close by.

Disliked: My only small criticism is there must be some kind of dog kennels near by and I did get woken at around 3am (not the halfway houses fault)

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Nice quiet site with clean facilities. Our pitch was a good size and private. Good mix of grass and gravel. Great to have pub on site with lovely food.

Disliked: Out of control of site but the kennels nearby were noisy for duration of our stay.

From the manager: Hi

I'm glad the campsite and our 16th Century ticked all of the boxes for you.

I really do also appreciate your understanding, that we are in the countryside and there are certain things that are out of our control. I will pass your feedback on to the owners of the kennels.

Cheers Matt & Team

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: The site was nice enought and host very helpful but the constant barking and howling from the pack of hounds right next door to it was horrendous. This went on at intervals day and night . We left early because of it. There was also no direct walks from the site due to a fast winding road with no pavement.

From the manager: Hi

Yes, there are not many pavements on the roads of the beautiful Shropshire countryside however there are several right of way paths & scenic trails. There is an amazing trail that takes you from the Halfway House to Bridgnorth town in just 30minutes, I'm sure this would have been communicated to you if you had asked.

I'm sorry that the hunting hounds from the local kennels brought you discomfort, I will pass the feedback on to the kennel owners.

Cheers Matt & Team

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lots of grassed areas near pitches. Staff very friendly and pub food excellent.

Disliked: Not many facilities - 1 men’s 1 women’s and disabled shower/ toilet. If the site was full it would be a problem.

From the manager: Hi

I'm so glad we ticked the majority of your boxes in you have a great stay with us and that you would "Recommend to friends" & "Visit again"

Regarding your "Dislikes", feedback is how we improve our offering so it is always welcomed.

The points you highlighted:

> Our shower block has 3 unisex, toilet & shower rooms. I can see the signage might be misleading to some, so I have ordered new, clearer signage. Shropshire Council require a minimum of 1 shower to every 30 pitches, so our 3 showers is way above what is expected for our small site. Also the best part is our powerful, hot showers are FREE (o:

> Our pub toilets are open 24/7 as well but, maybe this wasn't explained to you at the time. We will make sure this doesn't happen again

Hope to see you again soon

Local attractions

Start your local explorations in Bridgnorth (five minutes’ drive) on the River Severn. This pretty town was once a busy port, and today has a timber-framed Town Hall dominating the lively market square, a Victorian funicular that joins upper and lower towns, and an 11th-century castle with a tower that has a bigger lean than anything Pisa can offer. Shropshire’s industrial heritage can be seen at Daniels Mill (five minutes), set in a wooded valley with its vast restored waterwheel; there are tours to see the milling process. The viaduct close by carries the steam-driven Severn Valley Railway, which you can join at the station on the outskirts of Bridgnorth (five minutes). Other heritage spots include the restored furnaces and pottery kilns at Ironbridge Gorge Museum (25 minutes), or the recreated streets, steam engines and period shops at the Black Country Living Museum (40 minutes). When all you want is to spend time in nature, there are several fisheries and golf courses within 20 minutes’ drive of the site. Alternatively, head for the Shropshire Hills National Landscape (20 minutes), where you can join Offa’s Dyke Path or climb to the Iron Age hillfort at the top of The Wrekin landmark hill.
