You’re sure to make a few core memories at this friendly glamping site on a working livestock farm in Northamptonshire. With lots of different animals pottering around and splendid views, Flax Farland will give you the full farm experience from your bell tent, including a dawn chorus (otherwise known as the farmer’s free alarm clock) from the dogs and other animals.
The bell tents are near the farmhouse, where there are convenient toilet and shower facilities, a washing-up area and drinking water. You’ll need to come prepared with a torch for moving around at night and, of course, with stuff for the barbecue. If you’d rather get food out, the site is a 10-minute walk from an equestrian shop and café with bike racks and tasty goods like coffee, quiche and cakes.
Woodford Halse, a 10- to 15-minute walk away in the opposite direction, also has a variety of takeaway restaurants, shops and a dine-in Indian restaurant. Just like Eydon, half an hour’s walk away from the site, it has a splendid country pub for a dinner out.
Once you’ve settled into your bell tent, get out into the countryside and explore on foot. The site is 10 minutes’ walk away from the Woodford Halse Nature Reserve, a six-acre park known for its birdlife, so keep your eyes peeled for linnets and bullfinches flitting about in the trees.
Further out, hiking hotspots include the long-distance Jurassic Way (half an hour’s drive) meandering along a ridgeway between Banbury and Stamford. There’s golf (15 minutes) and fishing (20 minutes) to keep you busy in the fresh air too. Silverstone is a 25-minute drive away.

Local attractions
Combine some good old English heritage with your exercise and head to National Trust-owned Canons Ashby House (10 minutes’ drive) for a potter through Elizabethan rooms or a walk in landscaped parkland. Majestic, 18th-century Blenheim Palace has guided buggy tours of the Capability Brown-designed gardens, and if you’ve built up a thirst exploring, there are plenty of tempting pubs and tearooms in pretty Woodstock (both 45 minutes).
For a real dose of culture, take in a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in beautiful, riverside Stratford-upon-Avon (45 minutes) – or get down with the students in Oxford’s (55 minutes) mellow-stone colleges. While you’re there, you might like to admire the ancient treasures in the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology or tour the Harry Potter film locations.
If you’ve got the kids in tow, treat them to immersive driving games at Silverstone Interactive Museum (25 minutes) or wear out teens on the quad bikes and karting track at Whilton Mill Karting and Outdoor Activities (25 minutes).
