  • Peaceful site next to a 16th-century pub in Kirkby on Bain
  • 1.75-acre coarse fishing with carp, bream, rudd, roach and more
  • Three miles from Woodhall Spa and 21 from Lincoln
Fishing and fauna? Barn owls and kingfishers are among the residents you might encounter among the six acres of wildlife haven of Bainside House in Lincolnshire, with more feathered and furry critters easily spottable in the surrounding countryside via serene strolls along the waters of the Bain. Fish should be easily spotted on site as well: Bainside House's main attraction is its 1.75-acre fishing lake stocked with carp, bream, tench, perch, rudd, roach and barbell. Fishing not your thing? Golf courses and cycle paths are nearby, or you could amble along to Woodhall Spa, zip along to Lincoln, or hike the Lincolnshire Wolds, the Lincolnshire Fens or the Viking Way. (Whatever you pick for your day, round it all off with an evening at the topping 16th-century pub next to the site, which serves good food and a range of cask ales.) Among the basic but well-maintained amenities at this friendly place are a toilet and shower block with disabled access; recycling, and chemical disposal (only biodegradable or cesspool-safe chemicals to be used here, please). Bainside is for adults only.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The wife and me fished for 2 days catching about 8 fish each on both days all between 3lb to 8lb with lots of Lilly's where you can get snagged up , also the pub next door is very good for food but it's a bit expensive

Disliked On the way there had a phone call to say we can't have are pitch because it's water logged so I agreed to use a pitch next to the pub and we could pitch again the next day after 11AM because it was occupied ,so we lost time on are holiday having to set up a awning on the next day, we also smelt sewage now and again on the first pitch next to the pub not sure where it came from , the site could do with updating the toilets they were clean but very cold and doors need replacing not just putting a sign on the doors saying this, we had been very polite talking to Paul and he had been nice till the last day where I went to pay him for are 2 days of fishing , he was cleaning the shower and I said can I pay you for fishing he said how many days, I said 2 days me and the wife £10 each =£40 he said you can't pull the wool over my eyes you fished for 3 days Sunday Monday and tuesday I've been watching you on CCTV (nice to know) with CCTV everywhere even one on are caravan, we were pitching up on the Sunday till 3pm if he checks his CCTV, he then said, look at this... picking out pubic hair out of shower drain and putting it towards my face, I said we used are own shower in caravan nothing to do with us , with that he said give me the £40 and walked off not wanting to talk anymore, to Paul if you watch your CCTV you will see we only fished 2 days easy to spot me the wife and a Labrador all sitting together , on Monday and Tuesday. Your wife was very nice pity you couldn't be the same.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

We note that you and your wife enjoyed the fishing and made use of the pub next door during your stay.

However, we must correct several points in your review. Prior to your arrival, you were clearly informed that the grass pitches were very soft due to recent weather conditions. While not waterlogged, they were unsuitable for vehicles, and to prevent any risk of getting stuck, you were offered a hardstanding pitch. You were also advised that you could move to a hardstanding pitch closer to the lake the following morning once it became available (check out for guests is 11am). This arrangement was explained in full and agreed before your arrival.
For clarity, you were not required to move pitches at any point and could have remained on the allocated hardstanding pitch which was only 200 yards from the lakeside, for the duration of your stay.

With regard to the facilities, you acknowledged that they were clean. Your additional comments regarding temperature and maintenance have been noted and will be addressed as part of ongoing improvements.

In relation to the interaction described, we do not accept the account as presented. Paul is consistently polite and professional in his role. Furthermore, on arrival you asked both Fiona and Paul on separate occasions about fishing prices, and the information was clearly provided to you each time. When you later approached Paul, he was carrying out his routine weekly task of cleaning the shower filters. At all times, our team conducts themselves appropriately and communicates clearly with guests, including in relation to pricing.

Finally, the intermittent odour you mention has not been reported by any other guests. Nonetheless, this will be checked.

We make every effort to be clear, fair, and accommodating. On this occasion, we are confident that the situation was handled appropriately and that accurate information was provided throughout. We therefore do not recognise your review as a fair reflection of the service received.

We wish you well in your future travels.

Fiona and Paul

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The location for Woodhall Spa and Horncastle is ideal.
The Ebrington Arms (pub of the year 2019) is located next to the site.
Fishing is great, the toilets and showers are ok, but was informed that they're being upgraded, that said they were clean and heated.

Disliked Couldn't see a drive over grey waste area.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to pop a review on, glad that you enjoyed your stay.

The grey waste drive over is located in the car park next to the fishing lake, apologies if this was not pointed out to you, we also supply waste water carriers which are located next to the Elsan point for guests to borrow if they do have their own.

The facilities are being upgraded, the shower blocks are being done individually, we started with the accessible one last season, new doors will hopefully be fitted in April. Always a job to do!! Glad that you found them clean and warm.

We look forward to welcoming you back.

Enjoy your travels.

Local attractions

This amiable place is close to the Bain river, in the small village of Kirkby on Bain between Horncastle and Coningsby. Walking trails and cycle paths are easy to access from here, along the river, from the village and to the nearby Sites of Special Scientific Interest of Kirkby Moor and Moor Farm Nature Reserves, to the west of Kirkby on Bain. The Lincolnshire Wolds are six miles away. The handsome market town of Woodhall Spa three miles away is a Fairtrade village with a selection of top shops to spend some money at, and access to long-distance walks of the Fens including the Viking Way's 147 miles from the Humber Bridge in north Lincolnshire to Oakham in Rutland. (Much more easily, there's also the Spa Way, a traffic-free footpath of just over three miles from Woodhall Spa to Horncastle.) Golfers can shoot along the courses and academy of Woodhall Spa's National Golf Centre, voted among the top 25 courses in the world; and if you'd rather have putting, a course plus tennis courts, an outdoor pool and a croquet lawn are at Jubilee Park three miles away. For a day trip (or two), the castle, cathedral and shops of Lincoln can be reached in about 21 miles.
