Outside Cayo Retreat

General

  • On a working farm with stunning views of the Black Mountains
  • A 25-minute drive from Abergavenny and 35 minutes from Hay-on-Wye
  • Blaenavon Ironworks and National Coal Museum within a 40-minute drive

Picture the scene: it’s day one of your hols, you wake to the sounds of birdcalls, you sneak a peek outside and there, in all their glory, are the Black Mountains. If this sounds just splendid (because you're a sensible sort), head along to Cayo Retreat, a family-friendly site in Herefordshire, 25 minutes’ drive from Abergavenny.

On a working farm, this site is the epitome of peaceful: five minutes up a small country road from the nearest habitation, there’s no foot traffic (or regular traffic) passing by to break the quiet, and wanders with your dog through woodland and along the banks of the private stretch of river running through the site should soothe troubled minds (and energetic mutts) right quick.

Lengthier rambles are within easy reach too, as the Black Mountains – and the Brecon Beacons National Park, and the long-distance Offa’s Dyke Path – are on the England-Wales border less than a mile’s saunter away across fields.

When it comes to eats, the perennially hungry are well catered for: the pretty little village of Longtown is a 15-minute walk from base for a small well-stocked shop and a local pub serving food.

Please note

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Dogs are not allowed in the static caravan at any time: a kennel is provided for them to stay in.

Great freedom to choose your own pitch and had very clean toilet facilities which were regularly cleaned. Also no pressure to pack up and leave the next day.
The owner came around to check everything was okay and was very helpful and polite. Would stay here again without doubt.

Just back from a two night stay in Cayo Retreat, and we had an amazing time. We met up with another couple and had plenty of space between us to enjoy the views and relax. John was an excellent host, and he is doing a fantastic job at getting the site up and running. Learning every day what improvements could be made and how he would like to run the site. But honestly? I think he's doing a great job already. He couldn't do enough for us, and even offered to take our rubbish away on his quad bike as he did the rounds. The site is basic, but that shouldn't stop you from booking. Perfect if you just want to switch off from the hustle and bustle of the world and get back to nature for a few days. The pub is 15 mins walk, and Abergavenny is about 20 mins drive. We didn't make it to the farm shop (near the pub) but heard it has lovely produce. Maybe next time.

    Disliked:

I would say more constructive feedback than dislikes, but as it got busier over the weekend it felt as though there needed to be more toilets and rubbish/recycling areas across the two fields. More water points would be good too, but we brought plenty from home. Definitely recommend the 5l bottles from the supermarket before leaving.

The location is incredible! There are wonderful walks right from the doorstep of your tent and a spectacular view of the start of the black mountains. There are good pubs and a ruin of a small castle very locally too.
We were lucky to be there when it was quiet and got the place to ourselves. John is a super welcoming host, who went out of his way to check we were settled and had what we needed.
I'd encourage you to bring all drinking water with you that you need. This is a wild camping spot - be prepared! Having said that, there are portaloo's that are a welcome addition!

Lovely new site, idyllic location08/03/2020

This was our first time away during the current pandemic and we were nervous yet excited to get a change of scene. The location was beautiful, surrounded by hills and the site boasted plenty of space to pitch up and move around freely. From
the campsite you were able to do various lovely walks, suitable for a range of abilities, with a beautiful vantage point over the valley situated just a few minutes walk away at the ruins of Longtown castle. Facilities were limited - four portaloos; but they were deffinately appreciated given it is listed as a wild camping site. John the owner was friendly and keen to please. I hadn’t noticed that water wasn’t available, so if I was to go again I would be sure to take plenty with me.

    Disliked:

This is a very new site, so teething problems were to be expected!

Capacity - you have a lovely amount of space, and have provided some facilities. It seemed as though you may have been experimenting with capacity levels over the weekend and I would say that on Saturday night you firmly found your limit if you are to stick with the current provisions (over double the capacity advertised).

Ground rules - John set the tone of a very relaxed easy going camping expirience, however, if you give people an inch they will always take a mile and Saturday night deffinately saw people taking advantage of Johns goodwill. Ground rules such as turning off/down music after 10pm would better allow everyone to have a good time, whilst remaining considerate of families with young children etc.

COVID-19 - it is advertised as a wild camping site, but COVID does necessitate changes to everyone’s normal practises and therefore facilities to encourage better hand hygiene is a must to keep everybody safe and able to confidently return. Although the toilets were kept tidy and stocked, the provision of disinfectant spray/wipes to clean handles etc regularly with would have been appreciated. Water on site (not just the stream) should definitely be a priority if you are to continue developing the site.

I have no doubt it will continue to develop into a fantastic campsite.

Local attractions

The site’s not just well set up for ramblers… Other energetic types will be best pleased by how close National Cycle Route 42 is (just a 15-minute drive, or 30-minute cycle), and those who like to get up close with the local(ish) wildlife have only a 15-minute drive to source llama trekking.

People craving high-octane adventures can opt instead for the mountain adventure centre 10 minutes away, which covers lots of different bases: guests can get competitive on the paintball field, get adrenaline pumping on the quads, hovercrafts or rally karts, test mettle on the assault course or try out marksmanship with some clay pigeon shooting.

Anyone after a more laidback hol should maybe follow in historical footsteps instead: get a feel for the industry of this part of the UK at Blaenavon Ironworks and Big Pit National Coal Museums, both about 40 minutes away, or mosey around the ruins at Skenfrith Castle 35 minutes from base.

Prefer some urban days? Head to Abergavenny – known hereabouts as a ‘gateway to Wales’ – 25 minutes from the site for indie shops and foodie stops, or Hay-on-Wye 35 minutes away for leafing through nearly two dozen bookshops.
