General

  • Family-run caravan park near Blakeney in the Royal Forest of Dean
  • Within a half-hour drive of Puzzlewood and the River Wye
  • Easy access to the A48 for days out and cross-country travel

It’s gorgeous green views galore for those staying at Valley View Park, a family-run caravan park in the Royal Forest of Dean. Fields, forests and hills are all around, giving guests not only a rather fine backdrop for alfresco meals but also easy access to miles of trails for bike rides and rural rambles.

If you’re one of those folks that likes your rural retreat to come with a side order of useful amenities, you’ll be chuffed to note that the handy location just off the A48 means you can nip over to the nearby villages of Newnham or Blakeney in a few minutes when your day’s exertions have left you in need of a pint, a curry or a bag of chips.

Travel further along that road and you’ll encounter a whole heap more tiptop days out – canoe trips, heritage railway rides and Puzzlewood’s magic-themed trails are all within a half-hour drive, as is the cathedral city of Gloucester.

On site is geared towards the whims of those whose tastes lie in life’s simpler pleasures (who needs discos and video games when you’ve got those views to gawp at while sizzling a sausage on the barbie, eh?) A smart modern bathroom block houses toilets, showers and accessible facilities, and there’s a launderette for tarting up your togs.

Brilliant site for young children & as a base for exploring the area08/31/2021

    Beautiful view from pitches.
    Sunsets.
    Friendly staff.
Great location - 20mins to all that Forest of Dean has to offer.
    Easy access.
Great pitch facilities - water, power and drainage on each.
Play area was great for young ones.
    Very safe indeed.
Great phone and 5G signal (unusual in this area).
    Good value.
OVERALL A FANTASTIC WELL RECOMMENDED SITE

    Disliked:

Paying for showers separately - just annoying. Water and power usage will be the same as people showing in caravans. Feels unnecessary.

Even better if - consider cutting back some of the vegetation in the adjacent field along the boundary with the pitches, to make the most of the amazing views.

Loved the campsite, very tidy and space to play ball games. Lovely wooden park area for children.

    Disliked:

The showers were terrible only one out of two in both men’s and women’s worked. If you were small the spray didn’t really reach you. I had to use a stool to wash my hair. Also they charged a pound for 7 minutes. I would rather pay more for camping and not pay for showers. This is a really important part of camping for oh r people they need more showers which work.
A small shop would be good as not near any shops. We went to one recently and they had an honesty shop worked really well

We stopped off here on our way down to Cornwall. It is a lovely small campsite with a park for the kids and spacious pitches. It has beautiful views of the surroundings on the bottom pitch, and is close to the Forest of Dean which is amazing for the kids! The owner seemed really lovely although we never met, emma made sure she sent a message to us prior to arriving with a warm welcome and all information, and helped us with a few issues with the barrier gate quiet late at night.

    Disliked:

I really don’t like to put any bad feedback unless absolutely necessary, and unfortunately I feel like the showers and toilet roll issue was quiet a big issue for us with 3 children. The showers where not powerful enough, they trickled so it was a nightmare with kids shampooing and conditioning hair in 7 minutes. I could just about bare it myself. The showers where not included in the price paid, you had to pay for 7 minutes and for the pressure the showers where giving off I didn’t feel like it was ok to be charging people for this. There was only one occasion were we had toilet roll available too. We really don’t like to moan but maybe this is something that could be looked at for the future so we can enjoy a second stay here even more than this one

Great location for accessing activities within the Forest of Dean.
Good play area for the kids.
    Great views.
    Low road noise.
    Modern toilet block.

    Disliked:

Although the toilet block is modern, sadly it isn't cleaned every day. The handsoap and toilet rolls appeared to be replaced, but it was obvious that the toilets, sinks and showers were not refreshed every day. This is a shame as I feel it lets the rest of the experience down and is such a simple thing to rectify.

Also when you have a shower you have to pay a meter to get the shower to work. £1 for 7 mins. This is unusual but could be acceptable if the shower heads were of good quality and you could actually get wet enough under the shower to be able to wash hair and yourself.

Another point to make is that I have no idea who the owner was. No one around to greet you, or to check if everything is ok with your stay. The only contact I received was a text message telling me the pitch number and access code. If we did have a problem of any kind I wouldn't have known where to go to ask for assistance, or even who to ask.

Quiet camp site, clean, good size pitches with hard standing pitches in the first field and tents in the second field. The owner was very pleasant. The area is close to the Forest of Dean.

    Disliked:

The showers were not great. I’d read other reports so was expecting to pay £1 for 7 minutes but the power in the shower was poor and required push button to keep it working.

Local attractions

Boots and bikes at the ready – one could easily spend many a day roaming the trails of the Royal Forest of Dean. A popular pick is the four-mile art-meets-nature sculpture trail 20 minutes from the park; those with rather more time on their hands might like to pick sections of the Wye Valley Walk or the Gloucestershire Way long-distance trails.

For a close-up view of the forest’s trees, zip through the canopy at Go Ape!, 10 minutes away, or venture along the eerie woodland paths at Puzzlewood (20 minutes). Prefer to take in the views in comfort? Head to the Wye Valley Railway, 20 minutes away, for a scenic heritage train ride.

If you’re keen to see what lies beneath, take an underground tour at Clearwell Caves, 20 minutes away; those who prefer to stay out in the daylight may like instead to join a canoe trip from Ross-on-Wye or take a trot around Gloucester’s cathedral and Jet Age Museum.
