There's plenty of greenery around the site

General

  • Peaceful site on the edge of the Gloucestershire Cotswolds
  • 10 minutes’ drive from the towns of Cirencester and Tetbury
  • In the grounds of the Thames Head Inn bar-restaurant

Stunning landscapes, scenic market towns and the peace and quiet of the Cotswolds… How could you say no to that? At family-friendly site The Thames Head Inn, four miles from Cirencester market town in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, you definitely won't want the chance.

Thames Head is well-placed for exploring the spectacular Cotswolds on foot or by bike – the start of the Thames Path, which follows the world-famous river for 184 miles from source to sea, is half a mile from the site, and there are loads of cycles tours and walking routes starting in Cirencester and Tetbury, both within 10 minutes’ drive of the site.

If that's not your scene, kick back on the dog-friendly site in the shade of the trees, soaking in the scenic and peaceful Cotswolds countryside, or take a relaxed stroll through the fields with Rex.

Worked up an appetite? The site is in the grounds of the Thames Head Inn bar-restaurant, where food is served well into the evening and the drinks keep flowing until closing… If you fancy fending for yourself, pick up supplies in Cirencester or Kemble – a 20-minute walk away – and fire up the barbecue. For a change of scenery – and menus – there are plenty of restaurants within 10 minutes of Thames Head.

Good location close to Cirencester. The pub is excellent, great good value food and very friendly service.

    Disliked:

Stayed on the campsite, proximity to the main road made it noisey at times.

Flat, spacious pitches, with hookup, on a field behind a good pub.
    Friendly staff.

    Disliked:

Only one toilet and shower combined, which could be an issue if the campsite was full! Bit of a trek to it as well. Clean and maintained inside though.
A bit expensive, £22, as a lot of pubs just charge a fiver for hookup if you're eating there.

Too noisy for a relaxing long stay, but would be ok for 1 or 2 nights.10/30/2019

Very nice welcome and assistance to caravan pitches. Hard standing pitches mostly level and reasonable size. Site kept very clean. Nice setting and good location for visiting surrounding attraction/towns. Food in Thames Head excellent.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately there is both a railway (60mtrs - trains starting circa 5.30am and have to sound horn due to non-gated public crossing nearby) and the A429 directly outside the site which is very busy/noisy during peak times. Also, as has been mentioned, there is only 1 room for toilet/shower to cover all pitches which is inadequate for the number of people on site.

Can’t comment as we didn’t end up staying.

    Disliked:

Hard to comment as when I contacted them to state my partner was stuck at work and I needed to amend our booking and would pay extra to change this to the following day, the answer was a resounding no.
I understand people have cancellation policies but it would have been nice to have spoken to someone who actually showed empathy rather than annoyance at me ringing.
Genuinely would have loved to stay but my partner was stuck and we would have paid extra to stay the following night but this was not an option and the person I spoke to was rude.

Local attractions

There are plenty of stately homes near The Thames Head Inn if you want to get a feel for the history of the area, with Newark Park, Sudeley Castle, Dyrham Park, Bowood House and Berkeley Castle all within 45 minutes’ drive of the site. TV addict? Visit Chavenage House, 15 minutes from Thames Head, which you may recognise as the Poldark family home of Trenwith from the eponymous BBC drama…

If you’re more at home in the outdoors, explore some of the many gardens within 20 minutes of the site, rub elbows with the royals on a trip to Highgrove Gardens at the private residence of Charles and Camilla or, on a grander scale, stroll around the national arboretum at Westonbirt.

Got kids trailing along? Get the best of both worlds at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Garden – meet the giraffes, lions and camels, then wander through the gardens at the Victorian manor house. If that’s not hitting the spot, take the kids to learn more about the Romans at Corinium Museum in Cirencester or give them Harry Potter vibes on the Swindon and Cricklade steam railway.

If all of this sounds a little too sedate for you, never fear... Have a high-octane day at the Gloucestershire Rally School or test your mettle with a trip to Head for Heights – that adrenaline will be pumping in no time.
