  • Family-friendly site close to top Peak District attractions
  • A 20-minute drive from Buxton, Chatsworth House and Dovedale
  • Directly opposite the Tissington Trail; close to foodie pubs and shops
Off to Derbyshire for trips to Buxton, Bakewell and beyond? The Bull i' th' Thorn is located just off the A515, making it a doddle to zip from one end of the Peaks to the other and be back in time for tea. This peaceful park is set deep in the Peak District and comes with the sweeping views to prove it. Muddy boots are welcome at this outdoorsy spot – handy indeed given that the car-free Tissington Trail is opposite the site. After days packed with outdoor exploring, you’ll likely appreciate The Bull i' th' Thorn's hot showers (a separate shower room is available for families travelling with young kids). There are also three water points, an outdoor washing-up area for self-catering sorts and unisex toilets and showers. Although this is a self-check-in site, a member of staff cleans the facilities daily. The site's sister pub is a couple of minutes' drive away or a five- to 10-minute walk away via a public footpath. It's open every day; food is served from 12pm to 9pm, and breakfast is served from 8.30am to 11am on weekend mornings. The site is also a few minutes’ stroll from Tagg Lane Dairy, a family-run gelateria that uses raw milk straight from their pampered Jersey dairy herd.

Electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Great location and friendly welcome. Facilities were good and presentable. Drinking water was great.

Disliked The tent pitch we had was very uneven due to tire tracks in the mud so it probably shouldn’t have been a tent pitch (the others looked flat so think we were just unlucky).

A few showers weren’t in use although luckily wasn’t busy when we stayed so wasn’t too much of a problem.

I would say the quiet hours not ending until 9am feels a bit late, 8am would be better. I don’t know anyone that lays in when camping!

Electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Great facilities
Nice little playground was a treat
Beautiful views
A short cross over the road to reach the fields and trails
A really helpful team running the site - offering to take photos and making the efforts to make sure we were ok

Disliked The road running alongside the site is incredibly busy most of the time, including the evenings during the week.

Electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Location, walks , lady very helpful

Disliked Pitch very muddy , struggled to get van into position, wheels spinning in mud . Also getting back into position to connect to driveway awning as ground so bad. But other pitches looked fine , think we just got the worst

Electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Great campsite with clean facilities. A walk down to tissington trail and the sister pub the Royal Oak which has excellent breakfasts and evening meals. And a good selection of local beers.

Disliked It’s a shame the the adjacent pub of the same name as the campsite is now closed. It was so handy on a rainy cold evening to pop into warm up.

Electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Really lovely quiet place to camp.
Facilities basic but did what they needed to.
Water in shower was hot and toilets were clean 😊
Dog friendly too 🐾

Disliked Mole hills 🤣
Shame the pub attached isn't open as can imagine it would have been great in it's time - visited the sister pub and as lovely as it was it was super busy which I'm not a massive fan of. Dog friendly though which was great.

Non-electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked At £10 for non electric it was a reasonable price. Our pitch was next to a field with a few donkeys in it,it was a nice view.

Disliked No personal touches, nobody on site to help or to welcome guests, just an email with your pitch number a few hours before arrival. The toilet had no toilet paper and the water was freezing cold. The pitches are very close together, the people next to us moved just after we arrived to another pitch to a more private spot.
We went to the Royal Oak Pub (the sister site) 5 mins away and the experience was just as bad.Staff constantly coming to the tables taking glasses away and asking to buy another drink.

Local attractions

This countrified site is close to beauty spots like Dovedale (20 minutes' drive), where you can stroll along the water's edge and picnic by the far-farmed stepping stones. For a more adventurous (and hillier) trek on foot, pick up the nearby Limestone Way in Monyash (five minutes). Looking for cycle hire? Head to Parsley Hay (five minutes) to hire bikes (including accessible models) and tandems. This is where the High Peak and Tissington trails meet (both run along flat former railway lines, so there's little chance you'll run out of puff). Chatsworth House (20 minutes) has grand gardens and elegant interiors to admire (there's also a guinea pig village that's likely to revive any tiddlers suffering from museum fatigue). Buxton (15 minutes) is a spa town of similarly posh repute and is full of boutique shops, ornate terraces and cultural sites (it also plays host to the Buxton Festival throughout the month of July). It's also home to two popular golf courses (the Cavendish Golf Club for hot shots and Peak Practice Golf for newbies).
