General

  • Peaceful adults-only holiday park on the edge of a Derbyshire village
  • A 10-minute drive from Chesterfield; 20 minutes from the Peak District
  • Fenced site with a nature pond; a short walk from a canal towpath

Treading the towpath of the 18th-century Chesterfield Canal is a terrific treat, as you'll see for yourself when you pitch up at this tiny site a couple of minutes' walk from that self-same waterway.

Soul Space – whose very name suggests this place's potential to satisfy the spirit and give succour to the psyche – is a quiet and peaceful site with ace access to both town and country. Chesterfield, a sizeable market town, is a 10-minute drive down the road, and it takes around 20 to reach the edge of the Peak District National Park.

The site, which is set on the edge of a village, has found a happy middle ground between rural isolation and urban convenience. Want to set out on waterside wanders, or to cross the canal at a nearby lock and stroll into the fields beyond? All that's just to the north of Soul Space. Prefer a pint at the pub, or picking up goodies at a locally-run organic fruit and veg shop? All sorted with an equally easy stroll to the south.

Drinking water is provided for guests, but please note there are no showers on site. While barbecues, campfires and well-behaved dogs are welcome, unfortunately kids under the age of 18 aren't allowed to stay on site. It's also a place that's geared up for quiet relaxation so no loud music is allowed on site.

To ensure a high level of seclusion, Soul Space's two acres are surrounded by a secure fence. For extra chilled vibes, there's also a pond.

Beautiful haven for nature. Quiet, peaceful and very private site with a variety of flowering and other plants in between the pitches, encouraging birds and other wildlife, which was wonderful. Great, friendly communication from site owner before and during our visit. Ideally located for picturesque canal walks within 5mins walk away, plus the great Barrow Hill Roundhouse railway museum under a mile away. A highly recommended campsite for those wanting to get back to nature.

The uniqueness of Soul space, its commitment to nature and the environment. I loved the privacy of the pitches, which created a sense of being at one with nature. Also loved my private eco loo.

Julie the host was always at the end of the line, which was great as finding the entrance to The Lane was tricky due to some construction work.

While it is not remote it feels like it is.

That the Chesterfield canal path is just 50ft down The Lane outside the gate.

    Disliked:

The unexpected camouflage covering on the entrance gate.

Extremely disappointing “campsite” that was more like a wasteland.07/25/2021

The staff were friendly and responded quickly when we needed nettles clearing in order to pitch our tent.

    Disliked:

The very close proximity to two pylons in the camping field.
The pitch was quite small. Fortunately we had taken our smaller tent as our larger tent would not have fit on the allocated pitch.
The area surrounding the pitch was overgrown. We are no strangers to wild camping but this felt scruffy and unkempt.
The field is littered with giant cable reels, it just lent an air of untidiness.
The toilet was essentially a bucket with a seat, not like any compost loo we have used before. Take lighting with you otherwise you will struggle in the night.
We didn’t make it until the night however. After a trip to nearby Chesterfield we returned to find a boisterous group of males at the yurt opposite our tent. They were smoking and drinking and playing music while they cooked their BBQ. We understood that “no loud music is allowed on site” and that this was “a peaceful site” that would “satisfy the spirit and give succour to the psyche”. It couldn’t have fallen further from the mark. Within half an hour we had struck the tent and left for a nearby hotel. The proprietor later said she would have spoken to the group had we mentioned it to her. We had chosen not to do this as it would have created an awkwardness that we had no desire to endure. They were, after all, very close to our tent.
    We would definitely not return.

From the manager...

There are 2 '10 out of 10s' for the Blue Pitch which give a more balanced picture and they are by seasoned campers.

The female camper texted to say that they had left because of the boys. I texted the lead camper in the Yurt and they were quiet immediately. The 'boisterous boys' apologised and were quiet for the whole rest of their stay. These campers left within the hour so Im not sure about the 'struggling at night' comment. There are many solar operated lights on site and they would have known this if they had actually been there at night.

The 'reels' have been repurposed into a boundary round the Yurt only, and this stopped them going to landfill and saved us hundred of pounds. They are not 'littered' around the field.

The nettles did not prevent the campers from erecting their tent. In point of fact, their tent was up when we walked down the garden, and it was only because we spoke to them to welcome them that they mentioned nettles being 'too near to them' so we cut them down - all 6 of them.

We loved everything about our stay here. Our pitch was hidden away in the greenery, private and peaceful. Really close to a lovely walk down the canal with fish and birds to watch. Really helpful and friendly staff. No electricity or shower amenities, back to basics, as camping is supposed to be in our opinion.
Falling asleep to the crackling of the camp fire and waking up with the sun to the sounds of nature, just perfect. Will be coming back for sure!

Local attractions

Whether you're new to the Peaks or this is the umpteenth time you've hiked its many hills, there's always a new bit of its 1,600 miles of footpaths to discover. This landscape of dales, quarries and farmland is about a 20-minute drive from Soul Space. Highlights of the national park include (but are far from limited to) Chatsworth House (30 minutes' drive), Bakewell (35 minutes) and Castleton (45 minutes), where there are several impressive caves and caverns to see.

Also make sure to properly check out Chesterfield (10 minutes). After cycling into town along the canal and taking in views of its well-known crooked spire, grab a show at the Pomegranate Theatre and Cinema, peruse the town's antique shops or take a turn around Queen's Park (perhaps stopping to watch a game of cricket when the season's in full swing).

Who said theme parks were just for kids? Adrenaline-seeking over-18s staying here are within striking distance of both Gulliver's Kingdom (30 minutes) and Alton Towers (an hour and 10 minutes).
