  • Secluded and simple farm site in the Derbyshire countryside
  • Peak District walks and Chatsworth Estate within a half-hour drive
  • Surrounded by farm fields but just 10 minutes' drive from the M1
Planning to pack your Derbyshire break with lots of varied outings, ticking off big sights like the Chatsworth Estate and Hardwick Hall, outdoor activities in the Peak District and exploring places like Matlock and Bakewell? Park yourselves at Park Farm and you’ll be in prime position for all this and more. This quiet and simple site is just on the edge of the village of Pilsley, about 15 minutes’ drive south of Chesterfield. It's a proper rural location, looking out over green fields with herds of cows, and with country pubs a short drive away, but it’s also a convenient one with both a farm shop and a large supermarket within 10 minutes’ drive. Getting here should be pretty simple too, as Junctions 28 and 29 of the M1 are both about 10 minutes away. Keeping that true rural experience in mind, this is a simple stripped-back site with just basic facilities in the form of (regularly cleaned) portable toilets (please note the site has no running water, and no electric connections). There’s plenty of space for kids and well-behaved dogs to run about, and a play area is a short walk away for kids who have more energy to burn. Speaking of burning… barbecues are welcome here, so come along armed with all the bits you need. This site has a nicely secluded vibe to it, but it’s actually very handily placed for all sorts of outings, whether you’re into walks and bike rides or exploring historic houses.

Local attractions

Start getting to know your surroundings with a walk – you can head straight out onto footpaths around the site, hit the nearby Five Pits Trail or take your boots into the Peak District National Park (half an hour's drive). Something different, but still outdoorsy? There’s fishing at Meadow Farm Pond (10 minutes), horse riding days at Derbyshire Pony Trekking (20 minutes) and watersports at Carsington Water (40 minutes) – or you could just stroll around Matlock (20 minutes) or Bakewell (35 minutes). Getting a sense of the area’s history might involve an outing to see the impressive National Trust - Hardwick Hall (10 minutes), an Italian-Renaissance-style house with gorgeous gardens and an excellent collection of furniture and needlework. Crich Tramway Village (20 minutes) is another good place to get a sense of the past as you ride the vintage trams and wander along a recreated period village street. The big hitter among all of the local attractions is the Chatsworth Estate (half an hour), where you should find it easy to fill a day out between the various attractions including the farmyard, adventure playground and farm shop as well as the fabulous house and gardens.
