General

  • Pods on a family-run farm just outside Barrow On Trent
  • Derby, Donington Park and East Midlands airport within a 20-min drive
  • A short walk from three pubs and the River Trent

What better way to start (or end, or spend) the day than with a waterside wander? Barrow On Trent, between the meandering River Trent and the historic Trent and Mersey canal, is especially well-placed for scenic rural rambles (accompanied by a well-behaved dog, if you’ve got one looking like it needs a hol). In the middle of these green surrounds, the peaceful fields of Hill Farm Caravan and Camping Site make a great base for hols in this quiet corner of Derbyshire.

No matter when you come, stays in this family-run site's pods should be nice and cosy – each one is insulated and has electric heating included to keep guests toasty on chillier nights. Guests also have access to a smart toilet and shower block, a washing-up area and are welcome to set up a barbecue for a spot of alfresco cooking.

Other dining options include the three local pubs that can be reached on foot or heading 20 minutes by car into Derby to peruse the city's range of restaurants and takeaways. Need to burn off last night's meal? Help is at hand: make tracks for the local watersports centre (five minutes' drive) or lace up your boots and head for the moors and valleys of the Peak District (50 minutes).

Clean and well kept facilities, great location and friendly host. Within walking distance of Swarkestone nursery and plenty of great local walks with the nearby canal. Bell tent was a great size plenty of room for us and would definitely fit more if needed, We decorated the space and made it feel very homely during our stay it also had its own lighting and a fridge which was great.

Lovely small welcoming site. We stayed in one of the pods and were very impressed with how spacious it was. Theres a large decking area out to the front with a picnic table and umbrella that covers pretty much the whole area which is handy if its rains the whole time like with us! The pods are fairly close together but it still feels private although we had lovely neighbours both sides so didn't mind! The toilets and showers are in a block right next to the pods and were always kept very clean and tidy. I wouldn't hesitate yo visit here again as it was great value for money compared to other sites I looked at.

Ollie went out of his way to make us feel comfortable. Great location and plenty of space for kids to play.
Good lay out of toilet cubicles and washing up area. Also outdoor showers and toilets which the kids loved. Clean and tidy.
Bell tent had fridge and light with plenty of space

    Disliked:

An automated light outside the toilet which came on every 5 minutes, stopped me sleeping well into the night. Stayed in a bell tent and was full of discarded insects.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your valuable feedback.
We have addressed the lighting issue by disconnecting the external security lights.
The issue with insects has also been addressed and we have added additional inspections to our cleaning checklist.
We are disappointed that you did not enjoy your stay as much as we’d hope, however you feedback will help us improve for future guests.
Once again, many thanks for your feedback.
Kind regards,
Ollie Cotton

Everything, lovely sight not too far away from local towns and shops. Quiet and lots green open space. Amazing clean toilets and showers and not to far away. Bell tent was amazing, big and still spacious even with 3 beds inside. Picnic tables and large umbrellas for shade if needed. Someone onsite for help if needed and quickly got a small heater for tent when asked. Owner walked around on evening and available if needed. Great few days away and the kids and dogs enjoyed themselves. Will book again. Wooden huts on site look great and perfect for a couple or 2 friends and at a great price also.

    Disliked:

Close to toilets and light going off constantly, mostly because of the bugs. Seemed very sensitive. Disturded myself more then the kids.

The camping pod was spacious and well thought out with added extras compared to other pods, large outdoor table with parasol, external power socket and each pod has an outside tap.
Inside the beds are not fixed so can be moved to suit your set up, there is also a put you up bed if needed for a 3rd person.
The kitchenette was a great addition with a fridge, microwave and sink with running hot and cold water.
The site was peaceful, there is the slight hum of the A50 and you can hear the trains at times.
Ollie the owner was great, we had a small issue due to the wind and he came straight over to fix it. He was out in all weathers checking the Glamping tents due to the high wind. They are in the process of building a fishing lake and have added extra toilet and shower facilities. The facilities were spotless throughout our stay.

Local attractions

Barrow On Trent may be a peaceful spot, but if day trips are your thing you’ll likely appreciate its excellent transport links: major roads like the A50, A6 and M1 are all within easy reach. The local area's got a lot going for it, too: anglers can spend their days at nearby Robinwood Lakes (10 minutes' drive), while speed demons can zoom down to Donington Park race circuit (15 minutes) or East Midlands Aeropark (20 minutes). For more high-adrenaline adventure, head to the classic rides at Alton Towers theme park (40 minutes).

For days spent at a gentler pace, head to the house and grounds at Elvaston Castle Country Park (15 minutes) or the National Trust's Calke Abbey (15 minutes). More history is on hand at Derby's Pickford House Museum (20 minutes) – swing by here to try on some Regency costumes (if you think you can pull them off).

In need of some nature therapy? Head for the Peaks for walks in the spectacular valleys around Dovedale (50 minutes) or bracing hilly hikes like the Win Hill trail (about an hour and a quarter). For an unconventional stroll closer to base, pencil in a date with the Charnwood Forest alpacas (20 minutes).

Must see

  • Royal Crown Derby Factory Shop (5.8 kilometres)
  • Calke Abbey (7.4 kilometres)
  • Castle Donington Museum (9.0 kilometres)
